Hi,

This was mentioned a while back although i think the company has launched an update so i'll ask the question.....

What do people think of sphera? ( http://www.sphera.com )

First hand knowledge only please and no posts saying 'But I Think CPANEL is better....' please.

Do you know what price the software is going for for one server?

Thanks,

Rob

Sphera is around $250 per month per server, and it better and different than CPanel but some people might say cpanel is better. it is all a matter of opinion.

Sphera and cpanel cater to 2 different markets entirely.

Sphera can put like 1000 mini dedicated servers called virtual servers on one real server.

Cpanel caters to the end user it just does hosting.

Sphera is alot more than cpanel, but is the best out on the market and its coding is alot better quality than cpanel by far.

I got one of DI's Sphera servers a few months ago which I canceled. I encountered problems with DNS and virtual hosting (from within a VDS) and support never came close to solving the problem. Support was almost non-existent. When I sent a ticket to DI they respond by saying it was forwarded to Sphera and almost always that was the end of the story. Sphera's website doesn't have any link to support or to any resources at support -- no mailing list for users and not much users of the program anyway, at least at that time. I don't know now.

Looking back I'm thankful I was able to get out of it because I've just realized how CPU hog Sphera would have been. Imagine you've got 200 sites (Virtual Dedicated Servers) running with its own instance of httpd, ftp, telnet programs, etc. and each VDS having its own virtual hosting running their own version of CGI, Miva empressas, merchants, bulletin boards, etc. I'm thinking now the machine I got just wouldn't be able to handle it. I would say you need a real powerful machine to realize the potential of this program.

If you are interested in this kind of setup, take a look at FreeVSD which has a similar concept and yes, true to its name, its free.

I've got WHM/Cpanel now with BurstNET and although support is still lacking but the user base is growing and I'm sure shortly these users will have their own mailing list where they'll be able to exchange ideas about the software. I like the Cobalt user base support because by just subscribing the user list you're pretty sure most of your questions will be answered and your problems solved. But I'll have to give up Cobalt the server because its way too limited.

I wasn't aware of any free account and account creation control panel's on the market (apart from the outdated WebMin).
Any others out there? (For a Sun Server running Sun Solaris)

Thanks,

Rob
