View Full Version : Expiring domain, when will it "drop"?
jericho 07-03-2001, 01:28 PM I have been monitoring a domain I am interested in.
Expires: May 1, 2001
Record Last Updated: June 17, 2001
Is there enough information there for me to be able to estimate when the domain will be available?
jericho
Planet Z 07-03-2001, 01:37 PM It seems to vary greatly. There's no one set formula for calculating when the domain will actually drop from all the databases. If the expiration date was May 1, I'd guess it will drop any day now.
davymo 07-03-2001, 01:44 PM What worries me about waiting for a domain to drop is that the 'whois' is often 2/3 days out of date.
For example, I had a domain registered with Snapnames before 'whois' had even registered that it had been deleted!

Aloha
seems like nothing was deleted the last few days then this morning man tons of stuff was up some real good names were there
then like 30 minutes later like 2/3 of the names had been snapped up
its a game ya got to play day in day out everyday make it part of your morning (eve for me) ritual to check the names out some expired have not been released for a year or more so do not hold your breath.
davymo 07-03-2001, 03:56 PM Is there a definitive daily list of deleted domains?
I know you can search http://www.whois.org/searchD.cgi2 for deleted domains, but I don't think you can tell when they were deleted.
David@Digisurge 07-03-2001, 03:59 PM I don't think there is a list. But if there is and anyone knows about it please put a link up here:D

Kamika_Z 07-03-2001, 09:21 PM Colorless.com took 90 days to drop. I was going to get it, but some crappy Ultimate Search company beat me to it.
Chicken 07-03-2001, 11:46 PM Whoa, blast from the past, I used to either talk with the owner or designer of colorless (can't quite recall, but always liked that name) about 2 years ago. Pity, good name.
JCranfill 07-03-2001, 11:47 PM I waited for a year and a half for Netsol to release one I was interested in, and had a crappy search engine beat me to it as well. I checked it everyday for the last 6 months through netsol and register.com, it comes open, I register it, and appearantly they had done it just prior to me.
I'm wondering if it was an automated process.
Scott 07-04-2001, 12:50 AM I had my eye on a domain that expired June 2000 and finally dropped yesterday and was grabbed by a Korean company. I have noticed lately that many dropping domains are quickly snagged by Korean interests.
Aloha
yeah ya hear stories of Korean co that have loads of workers just grabbing domains ???
not sure how true it is but wouldn't put em past it
DHWWnet 07-04-2001, 01:41 AM I've heard some people have contacts at NSI...
jericho 07-18-2001, 08:04 AM I guess the best advice is to just check the domain every morning (6:30 am EST). Persistence seems to pay off. I was finally able to get this domain today. It's not the greatest domain or anything particularly valuable but I had watched it for a year or so on and off and every day for the last month or so. I was going to pay snapnames.com to do it but I saved $35.00 and was able to get it myself.

matra 07-20-2001, 11:26 PM One of my clients lost a domain name when he forgot to renew. It was snapped up the day it got expired by a person from Korea who promptly put it up for sale.. :(
However when I try to purchase 'expired' domains which were originally registered by netsol, through some other registrar, it seems to not happen even after a month or so. Seems so fishy.
Now netsol offers a facility where for $49 you can pre-book a soon expiring domain name. when it does expire, it is immediately snapped up for you.
