Hi, I am looking for a webhost, but I have no clue as to how much bandwidth i will be using. I will not be hosting many files to download (those that are downloadble will be under 2MB), and have no clue how many hits i will get. So I guess i will just ask

1.what does your sight contain
2. how much bandwidth does it use
3. Who is your host

Thx!

I used to run a wrestling web site a few years ago (wrestlinginsider.com). I had a combo of text, images, real audio, and some other media formats. I averaged around 1,000 visitors a day. I don't think my bandwidth ever went over 15gigs. However most of my visitors accessed a BBS which didn't have much besides text.

If you are starting out, you will probably won't use more than 500 MB (0.5 GB)

If you start getting a lot of visitors and advertise properly your transfer will obviously increase quite a bit, but customers who utilize 15GB are not very common. :)

hehe i am just like you, my site has lotsa files but i don't host em on my account :)
i get about 4,000 uniques a day and about 500mb bandwidth a day (15gb a month).

I run a BB much like this one, gets around 180,000-200,000 page views a day and transfering about 1.2 gig a day. Unique hits I'm not all sure of anymore, its pretty random....

Its hosted on a shared T3, which is corp. use only, so not much traffic, so its basicly dedicated. On a dedicated Compaq server....

This BB is doing about 50gb a month, about 1.6gb a day. Not sure on page views etc... But just a rough idea for you.

That is a phenominal bandwidth, is it higher perhaps because there is no caching at users computers, all pages being dynamically created?

mycool.com had over 600,000 page impressions last month and used 16GB of bandwidth. Most is traffic from the message boards which are text and mod_gzip is installed, which reduces bandwidth by 75% for us.

That would be pretty much it, since the pages are dynamically created from the MySQL database.

Sorry if I am being rude, but you guys are missing the point! All you are doing is confusing Disc13.

Congratulations! You are all very successful with your sites, but I think Disc13 is going to have the impression that he will need 50 GB of bandwidth a month when he might only need 1GB at best to get started.

Disc13,

You would probably be on the "safe side" if you got an account with about 2-3GB monthly transfer for the first few months. Just make sure that the webhost you choose allows you to upgrade your account if/when needed.

I'm the administrator at Pearl Harbor the movie (fan site) (http://www.behindfilm.com/pearlharbor/). During the peak times before and after the premere, the site was doing a little over a gig a day. That was mostly traffic on the message board.

If you host downloads, that can really eat up your bandwidth quickly. A few hundred downloads at 2 meg per download adds up.

When you look for a host, ask them if they have mod_gzip installed. That can compress the webpages before they are sent to the browser. Not all browsers support the compression and not everything can be compressed. PHP can do the same thing if it's a late enough version (4.0.4 I believe) and the correct options are compiled it.

The bandwidth numbers I gave above is compressed output. We were avg. between 50 - 70% compression on the message board.

I run a movie site, too (albeit a cult movie site) -- it was a Yahoo Pick of the Week in February, and while I wasn't hosting a message board at the time, I do have tons of downloads. It spiked to a gig per day that week, then sharply calmed down. I had 10 GB; I used 9.7 that month, but didn't go over. It would have been very expensive for me to go over with my last host.

Usually, my site only uses two to five GB per month. I like having 10 gigs for that one month per year when I might need it. There are enough hosts who offer 10 gigs cheaply (anticipating that an average site will not need that).
