Hi All,

Im starting a hosting company and i think im going to use Donhost, although other suggestions are more than welcome, as some resellers help with getting you a merchant account which donhost dont.

I need a merchant account and was wonderign which one is cheap and i can get my money soon (UK). Im also wondering whats the best way to register a domain, using an automated system. And was wondering if this could be done using the donhost reseller, and are there comapnies that do this registering of domains.

Well.. you have to buy a venture 3 plan at least to start as reseller, then you pay $10 for a reseller setup.
After than you can buy packages from VO with 50% discount of the normal price. And you can resell that packages.

Im currently a donhost reseller and live in the UK.
For credit cards etc we just got ourselves a worldpay account (worldpay.com) they seem very good, helpfull up to now anyway and we are in the final stages of the the setup process.

Donhost has been very good to me and my business since we started up, up until recently it has just ran into problems, not their fault however, just bad luck. The support staff are really nice and are very quick in getting a responce to you. I would recommend them for you to start up with.

I'm currently a Donhost reseller as well and whilst there are generally a lot of good things to be said about the account there are a few wrinkles that you need to be aware of before signing up...

1. The site says "Unlimited Mailing Lists"... This is NOT your regular definition of "mailing list". It's only for sending emails to any accounts within your domain!Check the terms and conditions on this one.

2. There are some stringent security measures in place including scripting running in the safest mode possible. This can muck up some of your scripts so be warned.

3. CPU and time caps do exist on all scripting functions. These are also pretty stringent and some of my commercially bought scripts have fallen over because of this.
(NOTE: The time cap is 20secs run-time, 2secs CPU-time +5mb max mem for PHP scrips)

4. The Control Panel has a "wrinkle" that means that new user accounts (created under the reseller control panel) are created on the server within a 15 minute cycle rather than immediately.
(UPDATE: Accounts created by resellers are currently being created manually - taking up to 4 hours. This is a temporary measure to avoid further downtime)
Trying to create mailboxes before the account is set-up results in positive "mailbox created" reports which are actually false. (This "may" have been resolved by now but as it was never officially recognised {at least to me} I've no way of knowing). You must therefore wait 15 minutes at least, before trying to do anything else with the new user account

Bottom line, if your sites mainly consist of script intensive or include any mailing list needs then my recommendation would be to consider taking at least those sites elsewhere.

For the record, I happen to believe Donhost offers a good value service and I'm simply stating the facts as I've found them, often the hard way.

Oh and on the up side; whilst they've experienced recent downtimes owing to a few teething problems, they immediately included compensation of extra days on the account to cover it... without being asked.

that advertise unlimited usage and full cgi access to get
a customer (muggins) to sign-up, but then turn around and tell the customer (muggins) that this is not really
case.

Unlimited turns into "You're using too much space sir, please stop it or we will suspend your account"

Full CGI turns into "Oh, we do not allow cgi scripts to run longer than 10 seconds, sorry did we not mention that when you signed up sir"

I've fallen for it twice now, I won't mention the above.

For the record. Donhost don't offer unlimited bandwidth and as I've been informed CGI limitations (i.e capping) is to avoid runaway processes which is fair practice.

Can't comment on the unlimited disk space.

To be honest though, mentioning Fasthosts in the same post is a bit unfair on Donhost as Fasthosts really are truly awful. Donhost is in a whole different league (as in Donhost are MUCH better).

I'm not saying that DONHOSTS or FASTHOSTS are totally crap service providers.

I'm just stating the fact that they both like to boast all the great hosting features, but not a single word on any limits they impose.

I signed up for an account with ??????HOSTS, mainly for the ability to use CGI scripting. I was totally peeved off when I started receiving timeouts in my running scripts.

I contacted ??????HOSTS and explained. The reply was,
"We do not allow scripts to run longer than 10 secs!"

I WAS ONLY PARSING A 2,000 LINE FILE, it's hardly a RUNAWAY PROCESS.

What use is that to me. If I had known this or was able to find out from their webpage, I'd have gone elsewhere.

I think they sign-up customers with the view they only going to be hosting several bland webpages.

JUST GIVE US WHAT WE PAY FOR.

fasthosts tech rep's are actually convinced that they offer unlimited space and bandwidth. They use the whole, "We can eliminate all accounts at our option" policy.

FASTHOSTS should not be mentioned in here and don't forget their abuse department *** They don't care about their clients***** ... oh yes ... I had a very bad experience with them and will let everyone know as soon as I move all accounts and the email they sent.

I think you'll find that a very large percentage of FH customers become EX-customers very quickly... You won't be the first and to be honest you probably won't be the last either.

The reason the so called abuse department found that my website get more hits for Matrix Server than their website ....and ....
