View Full Version : Please list the best quality - lowest quality bw
Hi all, if you have 2 minutes would you mind posting a list of good providors from worst (Cogent) to best (around peer1?)
Quality and uptime.
Regards
Steve
p.s: what is NAC like?
alapo 05-13-2003, 06:00 AM MFN, Verio, Level3, XO, Global Crossing... all good.
james0911 05-13-2003, 06:20 AM best = Verio & UUNET
worst = Cogent & Yipes
What about PEER1, although its expensive, what about this?
Regards
Steve
porcupine 05-13-2003, 08:21 AM It's a subjective question, there is no best and worst, only whats considered from personal experiences as good and bad. That and bandwidth is extremely highly dependant on city/POP. Cogent may be great down in Orlando Florida say, better then MFN, but everywhere else it stinks, and peer1 may be great in Toronto, and terrible in NYC, generally speaking there is no "best and worst", so it's a kind of pointless question.
nickn 05-13-2003, 08:36 AM There isn't any definiate best and worst..however there is providers who are looked at as beign better than others.
But remember, buying transit cost $$, making peernig arrangements is free...
I know a lot of companies aren't in the position to do a lot of peering, but it does your routing/network connectivity best, such a company is servercentral, they purchase from peer1 and internap at least..however they peer with so many, it makes their pings to most places very good.
cheers,
nick

MFN, Verio, Level3, XO, Global Crossing... all good. Also good: UUNet, Qwest, Internap, and ATT.
FHDave 05-13-2003, 01:06 PM Internap is the best so far for us.

MFN, Verio, Level3, XO, Global Crossing... all good. You just listed Burst's providers, heh. http://www.burst.net/noc.shtml
SolidJoe 05-13-2003, 01:54 PM I didn't think they used all those though, I didn't think all the links were live...are they?
ThomasC 05-13-2003, 02:00 PM GBLX Is.
XO was... im not sure if it still is... heh.

neonlexx 05-13-2003, 08:58 PM Aleron has been awesome for me, they appear to have a very underutilized backbone. It also appears to be extremely fast.
I haven't had any downtime since I have been with them, They also were unaffected by the SQL Slammer worm. They immediately track DoS attacks and shut them down.
I couldn't ask for anything more then that.
Other good prividers
Qwest
Verio
UUnet
Level 3
those are the top 4 in terms of price and uptime gurantees, Aleron's SLA actually calls for 100% uptime as well I believe.

I believe there are 2 types of bandwidth coming from that datacenter: Premium NAC and DCJN. Premium NAC is quite good, and DCJN, while not as good, still provides more than satisfactory bandwidth.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
RandallKent 05-13-2003, 09:22 PM worst = Cogent & Yipes
while Yipes! isn't the best, I've never had a problem with them.
SolidJoe 05-14-2003, 01:53 AM Here is also something to consider, this is taken from the FixedOrbit website:
Peering
The value of a given network on the Internet is also correlated the number of indirect users it has. Because the Internet is really a "network of networks", the value of any network will depend on the number and size of the networks with which it has peering arrangements. Peers add value to a network by providing access to the users on its own network, plus the access allowed through the other networks with which it peers.
The Top Ten Networks Defined by Number of Peers
Rank Peers ASN Description
1 2,774 701 UUNET Technologies, Inc.
2 2,324 1239 Sprint
3 1,723 7018 AT&T WorldNet Services
4 1,049 3561 Cable & Wireless USA
5 869 209 Qwest
6 796 1 Genuity
7 630 3356 Level 3 Communications, LLC
8 609 3549 Global Crossing
9 564 2914 Verio, Inc.
10 501 6461 Abovenet Communications, Inc
porcupine 05-14-2003, 02:49 AM SolidJoe, Irony of that is, peering doesen't determine best, i mean look at those stats up there, for example:
People have more problems with sprint then *most* other providers, burstnet being a shining example of this. Qwest, connectivity may be fine, but it's often interrupted by the fact that they have constant network abuse, i've never such a neglegent provider in my life, reported dozens and dozens of offenses to their abuse department (anything from SPAM to 20mbps+ DoS attacks coming from a single source on their network for 12+ hours), and i've yet to ever hear back from them, or see any action taken.
These are just two examples, but theres more to it then just peering to say the least! :).
apollo 05-14-2003, 05:10 AM British Telecom.. Telia
Dragoon 05-14-2003, 05:56 AM Answers to this question are going to be highly subjective.
You're also comparing different types of providers.
BenDoherty 05-14-2003, 06:14 AM I have had dealings with MCI Worldcom / UUNET and i would rate their network/bandwith very highly.

Ben
Ok thanks guys, but would you guys say is the best of the best all around?
I have been told, though "bloody expensive" PEER1's uptime and quality, exspecialy in new york is exceedingly good all around.
What about you, what do you all agree on saying is the best bw supplier around, no matter the costs?
regards
steve
BurstNET 05-14-2003, 07:54 PM << MFN, Verio, Level3, XO, Global Crossing... all good. >>
These ARE our current carriers, and ARE live, except for MFN which is not turned up yet.
