Hello,

I was wondering if anyone uses a Satellites ISP? If so which ones? Are ping times real slow? I am wondering becasue you have to shoot it all the way up to space and back? How much do you pay for it? Who is the leading Satellite ISP? Thanks, Kyle

I heard it is worst then 56K and you can not play games on it because the lancey is bad.

Never used it though

I used to know someone who used satellite, but the latency was miserable (1500+) and the speed was ok. As much as satellite costs and the stuff that can break the connection I'd personally never use it myself.

Not worth it for internet IMO.

I also heard the download was good, but the upload was 56k speeds.

Yes, you download using the satellite, however you still dial up for uploading.

Inogenius that depends on the company. I use starband, pay $69 a month, and get 1mb. The latency is around 600, but I live with it. It still beats 56k anyday. Now a company like DirectPC I believe anyways uses the satellite download and 56k upload. I'd stay away from that. If you have the money and can't get any other form of broadband do with satellite.

Well it does beat 56k, but expsnive. I would rather have sat then 56k any day, but i have cable now.

Plus sat can go down often, correct?

Depends. Sometimes the storms kill it. Sometimes they don't. Getting wireless though as soon as my contract runs out in June.

well you can do like alot of people I know, get a t1 and a cisco AP.. and resell your own wireless service to those around you to make up for the cost of the T1. We can get them for about $350 a month here, so it does not take much to defray the cost.

True but the setup fees are enormous correct? For people like me who live out of town I don't think it would work.

Just think about it.... your signal has to go from earth, to space and back again...

I doubt I'll ever use satellite, but it would be nice to go camping with :D

its really expensive compared to cable and dsl, and the connection is faster than 56k but just like AOL, it disconnects you occasionaly, though i would go with satelite if cable and dsl are not available in your areas and all :)

A friend of mine has satellite . He loves it... :) He has recieve and transmit via the satellite so he downloads and uploads at 64k.

He plays some games through it, and says it quite good. The price is around $60AU/month for 64k with 1G downloads per month. Setup costs usually are $1000AU + though the telco and the government joined to offer a free setup to rural properties (he lives about 60km from town).

I have direcway at home.

Yes there is latency, so telnet/ssh is not any faster than dialup (I would choose DSL or Cable if it were available) however, web browsing and file dowloading are MUCH faster than dialup. I have had it for a year, and only a couple outages during severe storms (less than an hour each time)

Direcway has satellite upload as well (mine doesn't use dial up return as someone else posted)

$99 for hardware, and $99/month
