View Full Version : I have a unique hosting need, can anyone help?

I do audio production in Nashville, TN and have recently begun working with someone in Colorado. That process requires both of us having regular access to a large number of sound files. I've been running FTP on my cable modem, but I need more dependability and 24x7 access. I work during the day and can't be there to fix things when my home system goes down.

What I'm looking for is like 5GB of space and 5GB bandwidth. This would be a private site. As you can see, my needs are unique.

You can post here or email me direct at meyerstk@usa.net.

Thanks,
Todd

Hrmm. It would make some sense if you request more than 5GB bandwidth for that kind of work. A simple playing of one sound file quickly adds up.

Just my opinion.

How is that ideal in any way for him? He said he just wants FTP transit. So why would 5 domains, all the ASP blah blah blah ODBC stuff be "ideal" for him?

my mind boggles...

Thanks for the replies, guys.

What makes my request unique is that I need a lot of storage space and a little bandwidth. Space is relatively cheap, but it's the bandwidth that really costs. So there's my situation.

I need to make about 5GB of space available, but there's no way that I would use that much bandwidth in a single month. My files would be stored there, but rarely accessed.

I got a lot of responses, but most of them were simply directing me to "check out our plans." Typical stuff, 50MB/5GB kind of thing.

I'm not looking to sign up for anyone's "standard packages" as much as I'm hoping someone might contract me a custom deal.

space is not exsactly cheap, sure its cheap to buy a drive...

but when your taking up 5GB of space, that could handle like around 50 clients running at 100MB each, so thats like over $400+ a month

Thanks, but that's a ridiculous way to look at it, Chris.

There are a lot of factors that go into determining a service model, and webspace is just one of them. My needs may equate to 50 users worth of space in your model, but it's not 50 users worth of bandwidth, or customer service, or anything else. You can't take a single variable and extrapolate it out across the rest of the spectrum.

the point is that you only have so much space on a server, mine only have 20GB, so that means your using 1/4 of my server space for your one site.

bandwidth doesnt matter, you can have 300 sites on a server and pay for extra bandwidth if you need it, but you can't do the same for space, I would have to get another server.

your better off renting your own server, go to http://www.rackshack.net

I wonder if you were to go out and purchase a really cheap server (off Ebay or something) and get something like: Pentium II 200, 5 or 8 GIG harddrive, 64 MB of ram.

Then, you could ask a colocation center to purchase a small spot (you can get colo space for really cheap $25, $45, $60 per month) Then, just tell the company to charge you for the bandwidth you use each month (this way, you only have to pay for what you use). The bandwidth can range anywhere from $3 to $8 per GIG.

Here is what I came up with:

Server Cost (one-time charge): $300+
Colo Set Up Fee (one-time charge): $100+
Colo Costs (monthly): $45+
Bandwidth Costs (5 GIGs, monthly): $25+
---------------------------------------------------------------
Overall, a start up fee of $400, and a monthly fee of about $75.

Plus, with this type of deal, you could have your own personal server, in a 24/7 monitored data center.

Just a thought,

Jim

Ok, I've become convinced that my current - and free - solution is my best option. I'll put my PC and cable modem on a good UPS and hope for the best.
