I was just wondering if any of you had opinions on ircds. I need it to have support for ircservices (Nickserv, operserv, memoserv, chanserv, etc.) and IRC server linking.
I know that IRC servers are a popular target for attackers and DoSers, but I'm still interested in setting one up. In case it matters, this is a FreeBSD server.
Any opinions would be appreciated.
Also...if you run an IRC server, how much bandwidth do you use (and how many people are connected, etc)?

Unreal IRCD (http://www.unrealircd.com/) this is the ircd we use on our networks, it supports ircservices, and everything we need..
We have a constant use of about 1-3kb up and down all the time....
Right now, we have 569 people on 12 differnt servers....
I would suggest using Bahamut. I've been using it with IRC services on a network with 2000-2500 users for years (it was originally using Bahamut's predecessor, DreamForge) and it's worked just fine. I'm not certain, but I believe it may also be the suggested daemon to use with ircservices.
See www.bahamut.net for the web site.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick responses. I'll try those two.
I originally tried Cyclone but it wouldn't work for me. Even the developer couldn't figure it out!

How many local users do you have? 1-3kbps would barely support the network traffic I would think, much less any local users.

I would reccomend Ultimate IRCD. It can be found at http://www.shadow-realm.org/.

Ran on FreeBSD.
IRCD: Server irc.ins.net.uk: 2.8/hybrid-6.0.1(20010110_2). ACHiIMpY TS3ow
Users: local users... 13985 max.. 13995 (23.7%)
Normal operation irc is about 40k/sec. But its the DoS you have to allow for, and the syncronisation bursts
Its not the irc itself that needs the bandwidth. Its because you become a target for over 50000 users all of which have floodnets and only the most hard-core networks survive.
Hope that may help.
However Efnet does not have chanserv/nickserve or any of that.

Craig
