![]() | View Full Version : Earthlink wins 16.4 million judgement against spammer MarcD 05-11-2003, 12:08 PM http://www.hspstreet.com/archive/d.taf/what,show/id,12361/cid,22 :D Pilgrim 05-11-2003, 12:19 PM *sigh* ... and still they come.. :( RajanUrs 05-11-2003, 01:52 PM if the spammer can afford $16.4 million why did he go into the business of spamming ? if he cant pay up then who does ? RajanUrs 05-11-2003, 01:55 PM lol I missed this part....running an isp can be profitable :D The Carmack case is the latest example of EarthLink using state and federal laws to take legal action against spammers who illegally abuse the Internet. In 1997, EarthLink obtained an injunction against Sanford Wallace, the most prolific spammer of his time, followed by a $2 million judgment against Wallace's company, Cyber Promotions, in 1998. Last year, in what is believed to be the one of the largest victories against a spammer, EarthLink received a $25 million judgment against K.C. Smith, shutting down an operation that generated more than 1 billion unwanted emails on the Internet. bear 05-11-2003, 03:11 PM ...and with the judges closing gavel, seven *new* spammers are thinking to themselves.."you know, with him gone, there's an opening in that area of the market.." ;) I just received in yesterdays' postal mail an ad for CD's of "sales leads" featuring email addresses and more of businesses in all markets. Somehow I doubt they all opted in, and wouldn't be at all surprised to see my own addresses in there somewhere. This is far from over. RDX1 05-11-2003, 03:27 PM Nice :) ATST 05-11-2003, 07:36 PM RajanUrs, I was thinking that same thing. Except I doubt these losers pay up. and I bet they just make themselves harder to find. and you know what also pisses me off? The reason why spammers exist is because statistics show 1 idiot out of 1,000 people will actually buy something spammed to them. Therefore spammers wanting to make 10 sale will simply send 10,000 spams, and so on. *the stat is actually higher than 1 in 1,000, but I don't have the exact figure right now. The point is still the same. If people quit buying this junk, it won't be worth their time. Cirtex 05-11-2003, 07:44 PM hehe, i use Earthlink, this is good, now that Earthlink is Richer, maybe their customers going to get a discount :D deadserious 05-11-2003, 08:07 PM Originally posted by Hoobastank68 hehe, i use Earthlink, this is good, now that Earthlink is Richer, maybe their customers going to get a discount :D I doubt that. :D exogen 05-11-2003, 08:11 PM Ah. Nice read! It made me all warm inside. RajanUrs 05-12-2003, 11:40 AM many new ways are evolving to beat the spammers. one of them is an email account with a white list of acceptable senders addresses enabled by the account holder. if the sender's email address is not on the white list then the email returns to the sender with a request that a password be entered to resend. [the random password will be on an image file where you have to read and manually enter it] another is a pay per use email account....if you accept/send a unsolicited email then you have to pay for it.......see myrealbox.com this one may be the most likely solution to stop spammers from creating email databases [usually from webpage sigup registrations] the members will have to give an identification similar to Passport for any registration to a website but without a email address. But the verification will be authenticated by a third party who has your identification details. Davros 05-13-2003, 03:24 AM Good news is VA just passed a law against spam.. Any spam that passes through, or originates in VA is illegal. And since May East is in VA about 90 percent of the traffic to the east coast will pass through VA at some point.. Yippee! Now only if they would enforce it! hostpath.com 05-13-2003, 08:21 AM Originally posted by Hoobastank68 hehe, i use Earthlink, this is good, now that Earthlink is Richer, maybe their customers going to get a discount Earthlink hasn't gotten anything, and won't for a long time if at all. First, the case is on appeal so nothing will be paid until that is done. Second, it's likely that Earthlink will settle for a lower amount, just so they'll get something. Third, if the amount isn't lowered, I don't expect that the spammer will ever actually pay. Remember: in court all you win is a judgment. It's up to YOU to collect it. |
