Has anyone had any experience with hosting.com?

We currently have three dedicated servers hosted at RackSpace:
Dual PIII 750, 1GB RAM, 2 x 9GB HD
PIII 1GHz, 1GB RAM, 20GB HD
PIII 1GHz, 1GB RAM, 20GB HD

The two 1GHz machines are load balanced to the dual box which is our database server.

In any rate, we pay an arm and a leg for these things right now and are looking to trim costs by consolidating the web boxes into one and beefing up our DB box.

I got an excellent quote for .5MBps traffic, dual PIII 933 w/2GB web, quad PIII 750 Xeon with 4GB and RAID5.

Really nice systems but I've honestly never heard of hosting.com (I landed there when I, unsurprisingly, typed in hosting.com in my browser on a guess) and I had some questions:
server downtime - how often has your server @ hosting.com been down due to reasons that you can't control?
bandwidth - how good are their pipes? I know RackSpace has a tendency to drop the east cost every once in a while; that is one reason why I'd like to move somewhere else.
overall impression - would you recommend hosting.com?

Thanks,

Looking at your servers configuration, I bet you have tons of traffic going through those servers. Does this 0.5 mbps traffic mean your server will be capped at 0.5 mbps, meaning, you won't be able to have mroe than 150-160 GB of transfer per month?

cheers,

No, it just means we get charged a lot more if we go over. I'm not sure what we use now (Rackspace charges by GB) and we use around 6GB a day (down from 10GB by gzipping our pages).

We've started utilizing Akamai for our images which itself takes about .4 to .5MBps -- so that tells me our aggregate bandwidth is somewhere around 1MBps but I can't tell until Akamai stats start rolling in so I can compare to RackSpace's new bandwidth.

The bandwidth chart shows how dramatically Akamai took our traffic down. We started on the 27th and by the 28th most, if not all images were Akamaized. Great service!

Sorry to be a little off-topic... but what is Akamai ?

Thanks :)

I am pretty sure adgraphix recently changed their name to hosting.com, I read it in a press release but can't seem to find it now. I believe they did this right after their merger with Virtualis was complete.

Akamai (www.akamai.com) caches parts of your website and puts it on their huge network of servers. We currently have only our images cached but it is very very promising for the future in which they can cache your static page contents as well! (very expensive though).

Hey Matt,

I am not too sure about hosting.com as I have never used them, but I have used Allegiance Telecom (as our telephone company) who is the parent company.

Allegiance Telecom is horrible! They have no clue to what they are doing. We call them at least once a week to fix a screw up (and it usually takes them 1 month to fix anything); phone lines get mysteriously disconnected, phone line does not ring, very bad static, takes 3 months to get a new phone line, billing always wrong and much more. They also like to delete their trouble tickets.

Once, we called to have a service (distinctive ring) placed on a line. 2 weeks later we did not hear back from them, so we called. They said because they could not figure out how to do it, they just deleted the ticket! Nice!

I think hosting.com was AdGraphics before Allegiance Telecom bought them.

Hope this helps!

You may want to seriously consider anyone other than Hosting.com. Hosting.com is the re-branding efforts of AllegianceTelecom, Inc. to clean up a messy merger with Virtualis, Adgrafix and one co. in Great Brittany. There customer support is horrible, so bad in fact that a bunch of us who are resellers for this company are frantically searching to find another hosting company.

You may want to look at AffinityHosting.com/Affinity.com. We know of some people who are using their co-location services and seem happy.

Just some friendly advise,

Pam

Thanks for the replies (sorry about the bump). We're looking also at PWebTech and they seem to have good prices. What about their connectivity / support? Those are almost more important than the price of the servers.
