kobartek 06-30-2001, 08:08 AM ... but they promised to keep existing accounts alive until 2001,
any 9kd.net user here?
kobartek 06-30-2001, 08:10 AM ... until 2002 (sorry)
Ericd 06-30-2001, 08:36 AM Don't quote me on this, but it mights be because Donhost deleted their account (when Tacid lost it's account, it was returning a 404). :o
TechnoHosts 06-30-2001, 09:09 AM I woul bet a good penny that donhost didnt delete their account. What I think happened was they probably lost the right to add new domains to their reseller plan. This type of punishment has been enforced on other hosts, as well.
KoRnholio 06-30-2001, 11:12 AM I use 9kd also, and I'm getting that. Their account wasn't shut down, because their main page(go to it without the www, just http://9kd.net) still works fine. I'm emailing their tech support and Donhost also.
avara 06-30-2001, 12:27 PM I think it's sad that some people are dumb enough to sign up with a hosting company that appears offers web hosting services for $15 per year. 9kd's customers deserved what was coming to them. I've said it again and I'll say it now: you simply can't get quality web hosting without paying at least a few bucks per month. It doesn't work like that, no matter how much you'd want it to.
Please don't flame me. :D
Chicken 06-30-2001, 12:43 PM avara I don't think you'll be flamed for (what I think) speaking the absolute truth. Gordon and I have posted calaculations as to the minimum amounts needed just to cover the cost of a server, let alone the bandwidth, support, etc., of a host and that falls short of it. Hosting is a for-profit business (as one host I was talking to put it), and thus if you want good service, pick a host that pays itself to run properly. Loss leader starter packages are one thing, but if the host only has that one plan...
My opinion only.
KoRnholio 06-30-2001, 01:35 PM Alright, DonHost replied to me.
"Yes their account with us has been terminated for non payment and violation of our terms and conditions.
Kind Regards,
Daniel Conlon
Donhost Ltd."
And avara: There's no reason NOT do see if a host so cheap turns out good. If it's bad, then OOH WOW, 15 DOLLARS! If it's good, then you've gotten the best deal there is :)
SoftWareRevue 06-30-2001, 01:36 PM But then.....There are a lot of people that just want their own email address.
What then???
Should they have to pay $20-$200 a month for that?
sweethorizons 06-30-2001, 01:55 PM Exactly most people just want there own email address. I think those people should look @ compaines that have the cheapest price. Try hosturbo.com. They are 20 dollars a year and you also get alot of webspace for that amount incase you decide to build a site.
Chicken 06-30-2001, 03:13 PM If you just want an email address then you could choose a registrar who offers email forwarding or use a service like http://www.mydomain.com though you might get more reliable email service if you did choose a paid host. It really depends. Some people's businesses are based on getting email and if that's the case, you'd want to look for a solid provider, even if just for email. Just have to weigh the importance of anything and decide how much it is worth to you and what you do.
SoftWareRevue 06-30-2001, 03:49 PM Can't argue with that!!!!
I registered with 9kd.net right before it went down. In their defense they kept me informed constantly with everything that was going on with them. Then I was promptly refunded. They seemed honest to the end. (maybe bad business sense but honest at least)
Esn
SoftWareRevue 07-02-2001, 09:58 PM Well.at least SOMEbody gets a refund.........
What's your secret???????
Enrico Ng 07-02-2001, 10:19 PM he sent me this message:
While our last remaining tech and I were away for two days, we've received a warning E-mail from donhost.com that an account was abusing our service. We are a reseller of them. Unfortunately we didn't have any access to Internet that time, and they've terminated our account. This means all the accounts hosted by us are terminated. We're beyond "angry" and in bigger hole than we were in before, but we know that you are more frustrated than us. We've recently sent them an E-mail asking them to reactivate our account and yours as well. We've also sent an Email to instabill to give refund to people who've signed up from June 15.
SoftWareRevue 07-02-2001, 10:57 PM Yeh....I got the same message.
Unfortunately, I signed up on June 9. 2001.
Still wasn't even the thirty days to try; was it?
I understand they lost money, but I think they should stand behind their "No risk 30 day money back" guarentee..
After all ............ that's the only reason I signed with them.
Did teach me not to trust that kind of advertizing though.
Not bad........for fifteen bucks:angry:

Mezz64 07-03-2001, 12:11 AM I got that message too. Then 2 days after, instabill refunded my 15 bucks. I would have preferred the hosting but at least they didn't runaway with my money.
Enrico Ng 07-03-2001, 12:17 AM Although I find it VERY VERY SUSPICIOUS that someone would really beleive that they would make money with that plan, I still find that the person that ran 9kd was very sincere. I think his plan was to offer that bandwidth knowing that the "average" user probably wouldnt use up all the resources. He probably set prices so low in hopes to get lots of users so that he could get a quick influx of money inorder to have a backup to upgrade.
anyways, I've looked around for a long time and I think I will be getting WorldZonePro.
its the only place with over 100MB, telnet, ftp, perl, python, ssi, for less that $4.00
that looks reliable.
