This is really sad. Several years ago web designers were making big money, driving BMWs, taking long vacations whenever they felt like it. Now we're begging for work at any price. It's degrading. The market for web design collapsed in 2000 and here we are still trying to hang on.

Well, I wasn't around in those days (too bad) but I'm sure that these terrible programs like FrontPage, and 1stPage2000 haven't helped any. They make people think that they are creating a high quality website, when all it really is, is garbage!

You are absoultely correct. People will still pay for good design. In other words, when the do-it-yourselfers realise that creating a dynamic site is more than just loading FrontPage, they, too, will seek high quality design work.
Having said that, remember that there is a lot more competition out there these days and, like any business, you have to be creative to build your client base. Long gone are the days of snaggin the easy 5 figure design job. They are out there, but you have to invest more in marketing and customer service to secure these accounts nowadays.
