Looks like a good deal.

Probably better than even those $500 gateway servers, since those only had 1 processor, a 9GB HDD, and a tower case.

I noticed that as well, but then I figured they're probably having a bigger sale on the first one.

I just called and the price is indeed $800. The salesperson I talked to said he had no idea why the other ones were more expensive, but that he had sold a bunch of the 1000s for $800.

I'm thinking about picking up a couple.

Cbaker, I was wondering that exact same question myself and was just asking that in the hideout heh. I'm torn between the gateway (which might be over by now, or the ship date might be March 2004 by now, heh), or this one as a new home computer (with win98).

Could this be the reason?

You probably wouldn't want to use this as a personal computer at least not with win 98 or me.

Because they couldn't take advantage of the dual processors.

You would need to put on NT or 2000.

The reason is probably that the server at 1050$ is a 2U unit with more features and the one at 800$ is a 1U case.

cbaker: See any reason why these couldn't be used as FBSD servers? It looks tempting...

I think they should do fine too ... BTW, these servers do not come with any software installed ... so, no OS too, I believe ...

Yes, this is definitely a very good deal (better than the gateway server deal) ... I am now also thinking about getting several of these ...

Err... So? That's the software that's included with it. Doesn't mean you can install another OS; a better one, even. :D

True, I was just saying that there is software already installed so one does not have to install a new OS.

I guess we have to wait and see if they'll offer it again.

I doubt they'll offer it again, since they've basically stopped making hardware. I think the point of the sale was to get rid of their current inventory.
