View Full Version : GearHost is in the grave...
WineIsGood 05-05-2003, 08:35 AM What a surprise... GH down again this morning. Well, I've narrowed my new host search to cdxsolutions.com, amzhost.com, and ************.com. I know it's covered territory, but which is the better of the two (they look the same!) amzhost or ************? I forget... one of the owners posts here a lot and seems knowledgable...
-Dave
Former GH client.
poterala 05-05-2003, 08:37 AM Yeah, lovely morning...I went to check my email....bzzzzt...not.
I just looked at amaz and ************...one must be a re-seller of the other's services...the sites are basically identical, right down to the features offered per plan. That's not a bad thing, but just something to consider.

takalien 05-05-2003, 08:42 AM Is this down? or run away?
I need to hurry up to find another host.
btw, where's Ryank?
JodoHost 05-05-2003, 08:56 AM Curious, has GearHost given you a reason for all this downtime?
hostpc.com 05-05-2003, 09:16 AM Ok, silly question - have you tried contacting them?
888.535.5443 toll-free
303.524.1450 tel
303.524.1495 fax
WineIsGood 05-05-2003, 09:33 AM Contact them? Why? Many people try to contact them while their host is down, with no luck, and they all post their angry results here... I'm just a small-fry, so I'm not going to try my luck at contacting them. Besides, it really don't matter to me any longer... upgrades, DOS attacks, ISP problems, conversions, etc... whatever the new exuse this time, it doesn't matter... the fact remains: the host is down too often for me... so, the choice is simple: try out another host! If I try out two or three new hosts and get the same results, well then maybe the grass isn't greener on the other side, but either way I owe it to myself to try.
-Dave
hostpc.com 05-05-2003, 09:45 AM Well, if your host TREATS you as a "small fry" then I would DEFINATELY make sure you started looking. Every client should be as important as the next to a host. A lot of time, larger clients are looking for "breaks on pricing" because they have a large number of customers, etc. But if a host doesn't realize that it's the individual clients that put the food on the table, thats bad. Every client should receive the same respect, consideration and service, no matter what they're paying.

Tranz 05-05-2003, 11:01 AM Just tried this little utility and it says that there is something bigger at hand, or at least thats the way I read it.
Try it for yourself: http://www.siteuptime.com/users/quickcheck.php
This is not an add for them BTW. I just happen to find I and thought it might be of use to someone.
Almost forgot, select all 3 check boxes.

I have a site on GearHost.... when I check the siteuptime I get this:
Quick check for: www.nodomain_com (http)
Date City Country Time (s) Result
5/5/2003 13:32:37 Chicago United States 14.997 Failed
5/5/2003 13:32:52 San Francisco United States 5.143 Ok
5/5/2003 13:32:59 New York United States 0.257 Ok
Average Response Time: 6.799 seconds
----
My sites on another host check out fine... why is chicago failing? Does anyone else with a site on gearhost have this problem?
I checked out other sites and they do not fail chicago... but they are not on GearHost either...
My other sites are with fluidhosting.com... I'm moving the faild site above to FH as well TODAY.
WineIsGood 05-05-2003, 02:22 PM I tried this last night and got the opposite response: only Chicago didn't fail while the others did.
Coach 05-05-2003, 02:29 PM amzhost.com and ************.com... Both of them are one of those "unlimited transfer" and "unlimited bandwidth" companies. If you think you are having problems now, just wait until you actually run across a company like this that sells those kinds of plans for $5 a month.
Any company that lies to you to get your business initially, you have to wonder what they're going to be like later on after you've signed up with them.
WineIsGood 05-05-2003, 02:46 PM Well, true, that's part of what helped me make my decision... I think I'm going with cdxsolutions.com. $5.95 per month gets you tons of stuff. Might be a risk but we'll see.... I can always move again!
-Dave
Coach 05-05-2003, 02:49 PM They seem okay. They don't look to be oversellling services because their prices vs transfer seem very reasonable.
I think you made a good choice. :)
iThink 05-05-2003, 03:06 PM I nearly took an account with gearhost a few months ago. Looking at these 'gearhost down' kinda threads almost daily I guess I had a lucky escape.
BenDoherty 05-14-2003, 06:04 AM Ive had a small account for a personal website with them for over a year now, and i am quite happy with them. Only had to call them twice, and both times i got through and got my answer. I do hope though they get their downtime problems sorted quickly :)
Regards,
Ben
lobaloba9 05-14-2003, 01:02 PM why not try hostpc.com?
WineIsGood 05-14-2003, 11:28 PM They are not MS IIS windows based hosting with ASP and SQL.
Now it would seem as though I need to find yet another host, since CDXSolutions can't seem to keep their servers up and running.

Well then go to http://fluidhosting.com
windows specific: http://fluidhosting.com/comparison.php?os=windows
I've been with them for 1 1/2 months and they are great. They cost a little more than GearHost, but they are worth the extra cash.... I don't worry about my sites anymore... no more sitting online and on a forum dogging a host out... it is all love with FH.
I've had one downtime with FH... that I know of. It was 3:15 a.m. (I remember that time) and my site went down. I said "ok, just like everyone else." But then about 7 minutes later my sites were back up. I think they "reset" the servers... but instead of like other host, they actually only reset the servers... and it took time for them to boot up. 7 minutes would be about right.... let the server sit for a couple of minutes, boot, then restart everthing.
I pay more... but with 7 minutes of known downtime in 1 1/2 months, I'm very happy.
The only bad thing I'll have to mention with FH is the bandwidth. If you have a high bandwidth site and near GearHost 30 gig then you might want to look hard at Fluidhosting 15 gig (the plan that is similar to GearHost for a little more money). I'm floating around 7 gig per month so I'm good.
Good luck on your host.... who ever you go with.
shibby 05-15-2003, 01:22 PM Sounds like the same ole Gearhost. I left them about 3 months ago, and couldn't be happier! Gearhost easily has had the most downtime of ANY host Ive ever been with. Trust me, just make the leap and LEAVE. I am so happy with my new host, and they deserve a lot of credit. Don't want to make this seem like spam, but I know how you guys feel now, and there's nothing like the feeling of getting a QUALITY host. My current host is 24hostingnow.com, and they are GREAT! Don't be fooled by the very basic design of their site. I thought the same thing too before signing up, but I seriously have not found a better host yet. In 2 months I don't think I've seen more than 5 minutes of downtime ever, and this is the amazing part... the support is GREAT. I've literally gotten replies back in less than 5 minutes!
But getting back on topic...Ive had nothing but bad experiences with GH during the entire year I was with them. Trust me, just leave!

I like their site design... at least you don't have to click 3 or 4 times or search a complex site to find the prices, features and benefits.
Seems really nice for the price. I'm going to check them out for some of my other domains that I can't fit on fluidhosting... thanks for giving the reference.
amzhost 05-15-2003, 02:51 PM shibby, i think WineIsGood is looking for a Win host, not linux or unix.
WineIsGood 05-15-2003, 03:14 PM Yeah, I'm looking for windows and SQL. I found CDXSolutions.com but I'm leaving them... serious problems over there... nice enough people, like GearHost, but these guys simply can't keep a web server running properly!
I've moved once again, this time to jodohost.com. Good prices and so far the setup and support have been excellent. Probably the fastest FTP transfer times I've seen in the past few months too. We'll see what happens!! My fingers are crossed!
