Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this.

What data center might be open to doing a rack full of tower colos?

How many towers might one fit in a full rack?

thanks :)

Well it depends how tall the towers and racks are. Most racks are around 42U at 1.75 inch per U. You can usually fit 2 towers next to each other. You will lose an inch of so to put a shelf to stack more towers on.

My guess is around 6 towers, but it depends how tall each case is. If you use tiny cases then more.

my personal knowledge of data centers that will do it :
www.tera-byte.com , you have to be within 4u
www.istop.com - mid tower no additional charge , they charge more for full tower .
Note : istops prices are in canadian dollars
Istop experience:
I do not intended to slander Istop , these statements are to the best of my recollection and there fore may not be 100% accurate.
Now I have had not so great experience with istop there network uptime "target" is 95% , they normally get above 90% uptrim to 98% network uptime , with indivual servers being lower . When I colocated there they pluged my server into some one elses UPS and over loaded it. Unplugged and plugged my server back in without elling me in hopes I didnt notice , however ext2 bad block check didnt work so I had a couple hours downtime . There 24 hour support is nothing to brage about , its a guy who sits there and answers the phone to say "you will have to wait untill office hours to do that" . for any thing but a simple reboot . They also claimed (they dont any more) that quensview was switched , and it was not . Even once I pointed this out they didnt want to give a partail refund . I then had payment issues with them , they wouldnt do automatic withdrawle and refused to send paper bills and insisted I check my "istop e-mail" for the bills.

Yea, I meant mid towers, not full, and a whole rack of them.

DedicatedNow.com does it, I'm thinking of putting about 2-3 mid-towers in. They have very nice deals!

lol, they just missed out on the last rack I bought by not taking any sales when I was buying. Thanks for the tip, though, I didn't know they did towers too.

You mean six towers tall, two on each shelf?

In a full rack, with midsize atx cases i imagine 6-8 - with them stacked side by side.

Not a good idea unless you use micro atx cases, then you are really talking!

Depending upon the size, you should fit 8. You can measure your towers and figure it out. 1.75" per "U". Remember the space for the shelves.

Most data centers don't care what you put in the cabinets (they shouldn't) providing it is safe and legal.

There are a lot of ATX-conversion kits to convert your tower servers into rackmounts. This would probably be cheaper than stacking them side by side. We have several customers who have rackmounted tower servers into 42-U cabinets. Of course, it depends on what brand/model towers you have.

Example:

We host a bunch of tower servers here at Cybercon. We don't use tower servers for dedicated servers, we only have colo customers using our racks.
