View Full Version : "Independent" hosting review sites
potoole 05-04-2003, 02:16 PM I'm doing some research about webhosting and I'd like to get peoples opinion about some of the "independent" review sites I've seen. To me, just about any site with a ranking sytems is suspicious. Since I've got my current (soon to be ex) hosting site, featurePrice.com, from one of these site I'm even less trusting.
One site I've seen, listed here and elsewhere, is findmyhosting.com. They seem geniune.
Feel free to share your experiences.
Thanks.
Martie 05-04-2003, 02:54 PM Hi potoole!
Well the search function is temporarily down here in the forum but directories are a current topic here continually it seems.
I think after doing some research you will find many directories whether they define themselves as independant, unbiased, etc. they will all have some sort of advantage for their listings. Paid banner adverts, PPC for higher ranking, etc. The list goes on! Ive heard good things about findmyhosting but keep in mind that hosts that are listed there are required to pay a commission fee TO findmyhosting for clients they gain through them. I think its useful to look into a few directories, check the webhost site for forums or client testimonials and then if time permits, follow up on those. Forums (like this) can be an added resource for you but I definitely recommend doing homework elsewhere too. :D
Tropical Tundra 05-04-2003, 03:56 PM I like find my hosting:
http://findmyhosting.com
They don't accept advertising dollars from host plus you can see actual customer reviews and they try to ensure those reviews are real by validiating url/email etc. Although they do have a commission based system the host can not buy a better rating or placement.
hostdown 05-04-2003, 04:01 PM wrong, they get $$$ from hostdime and others that buy through clickthroughs from them.
FindMyHosting is probably the most neutral of host directories. Though they may not be perfect, I can't think of anyone else that even tries being neutral.

I started this same thread a week ago and the only thing I learned is that there is no such thing as a totally unbiased review site. Best to shop around and come to forums like this to filter though the comments.
ForumsAddict 05-04-2003, 06:45 PM findmyhosting is a good site.. i agree

We don't sell clickthroughs. We take a commission on sales. Different all together & no host can buy an advantage.
No any one site is perfect - so it's best to look across a few sites to find consensus. Many sites list hosts in order of how much they paid - but thats ok, it's mostly clear when that is the case, and for the most part their comments / consumer feedback is honest enough.
Webhostingratings is a pretty good site from a ratings perspective.

Get your facts straight before making a blanket statement like that. I know they charge commissions and I mentioned that in my original post but web hosts can not buy ad banners or placement on their site that sets Find My Hosting miles apart from most of the other directories out there which are either owned by a host company or they make money from host ads and "top ten" lists etc. The fact that they offer actual customer reviews and that they try to verify the validity of the reviewer put them on top of all the others IMO. A person shouldn't just use a directory anyway due diligence research then taking look at several directories and WHT then get a feeling from their and of course ask pre-sale questions. I stand my previous post find my hosting is the best of the lot.

"I did my research and found that they pulled your hosting assured rating - care to comment on that one manny boy?"
Or why it's still up there at all Mr. Mcmaster - don't play word games - commisions from purchases.
MrWatchDawg 05-10-2003, 03:01 AM LOL! and yes all these review sites personally I think will have some untruthful information!
