You can check dedicatednow, or rackshack ..

But before getting a dedicated server .. I would suggest for you to get a reseller account first and get your feet wet.

Ok,let me ask another question then - whats the difference between a reseller account and a dedicated server running cpanel/whm?
Thanks,
Dan

Dan,

The biggest difference is that if it's a dedicated server you get to do all the admining. Which means you'll need a pager, a good monitoring service, and a lot of coffee for the late or middle of the night incidents. :D

Other than that... you won't have root access (which may or may not be a big deal) and if you need support be expected to pay for it (unless you get a managed server).

I would STRONGLY suggest a Reseller account if you're just starting out.

If I can jump in here . . . the next logical question (for me anyway) would be: rather than comparing a reseller account with a dedicated server, what about comparing a reseller account with a managed server. Would the managed server situation be somewhat like a host that provides a reseller account - the sys admin, software upgrades, maintenance, and care and feeding of the server is taken care of leaving me with with selling, setting up accounts, and so forth?

thx,
yjack

On managed servers the tech only manage your machine configurations and related issues. The business you're running on it it's your function to manage, I think. Maybe you can find a managed hosting business company... or maybe you can get a employee to do the job :)

Sometimes managed services go as far as setting up the accounts for you. Main thing to note is that you're going to be quite a bit of money for a managed server.

Agreed biggest problem with managed servers is they become unprofitable.

If you just want to get your feet wet I have to agree that a reseller account is the best place to start. Once your business can support the costs of a server I would consider a semi managed solution.

Semi managed soluitons generally cover setup, reboots, patches, kernel upgrades, recompiling, etc. Leaving account creation and maintence to you.

This is what I would suggest. Get a 99 $ linux server with cpanel as well as a reseller plan with a reliable host. If you want to get to somewhere in this business you have to administer servers at some point in your career and this could be a good oppurtunity to get you started. Start reading, searching and scratching through the net for information. Get hands on experience with your server, host your own site on that and try getting the hang of it. In the meantime till you feel comfortable, you can set your clients accounts within your reseller account and once you feel ready, take the plunge, transfer all your sites to your own server and get cracking... :)

There are always a lot of people around to help and you can get some very good people to manage your server for around 50 usd a month.

Good luck,

Jeremy

I prefer a dedicated server simply for the control and flexibility it gives you. That said, without some server management experience it may not be the best way to start and so a reseller account would be a good way to get your feet wet. Meanwhile, install Linux or FreeBSD (or both) and play with them, learn how things work and you'll be better prepared for managing your own server.

In the price range you specified I'd look at offerings from

http://www.tera-byte.com (RAQ's)
http://www.rackshack.net
http://www.serverbeach.com

There are others as well; these came first to mind as I have recently been on all three websites

This advice was by far the best.

Another issue to consider when trying to choose which route to go is how many resources do you consume? If you require so much diskspace and bandwidth that your needs extend beyong the "normal" reseller account then grab a whole server.

Most people, however, do not consume enough resources to warrant the whole server, and so the advice to look into reseller accounts is sound.
