kohashi 05-04-2003, 06:20 AM | You would be lucky to get above registration. Its plural, which is rather strange and takes away a lot of commercial value. Not to mention it is a worthless extension. .ws is hardly worth anything. Western Samoa....

Angel78 05-04-2003, 07:54 AM althoug .ws is a bad tld, host.ws would be nice ( if you do some branding ) but hostS.ws...not sure. |

It is marketed under the WEBSITE. Nevermind what it really means, because most people don't really care what it really means, aslong as it sounds good. I find the .ws to be a nice extension.
.tv is also not what it stands for, you'de think it is actually for t.v but it isn't, yet .tv has been selling like hotcakes.
Too bad it is a plural name, unless HOSTS.WS becomes a directory for hosting? |
Incognito 05-04-2003, 11:52 AM First, I would never purchase a .ws. However, more importantly, it is plural and pronounced the same as if it was singular. The only person who could possibly benefit from it is, host.ws could benefit if you did a lot of advertising of it. There are thousands of good names still out there. This is not one of them. |

.ws = western samoa. just because it is marketed under website doesn't make it any better. it is still a worthless (and personally i think it was a dumb idea to even try to market it as website) ccTLD. You are very right about one thing, people DO NOT care what it really means, they would rather type .com. You can enjoy the .ws extension to your hearts content, its pretty much open for the taking. I havnt seen any real good sales of .ws sites, and I dont think many domainers have. That is why nobody uses it, and also makes the ccTLD worthless. |
phisholay 05-04-2003, 04:10 PM It takes a developer to make it happen. |
Agreed ws as an extension aint great, but that said you havent got a bad name there. Those comments about plural.....boring. Loans.com went for how many millions? The real issue is the extension. The only constructive opinion in my opinion comes from "phisholay". Make the name "stick" and you will reap the benefits. |
Incognito 05-04-2003, 09:54 PM It is very easy in speech to differentiate loans from loan - not so easy to differentiate hosts from host. In addition, loans is used in its plural form quite a bit more for an individual business than is hosts, which would primarily lend itself to a site about hosts, not of a specific host. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just with the combination of plural and .ws, I don't place a tremendous value on it. |
thinkaholic 05-05-2003, 12:55 AM I agree that .ws is not the best type in domain, but hosts.ws is a good one in my book. It could easily be a hosting type of directory. All you'll need is some time (well, a lot of time) and dedication to make it work.
With as many hosts out there, there's always room for another directory to help hosts advertise. Plus, some of the more popular ones make a very noce profit.
Great name! Good luck! |
fonzerelli79 05-05-2003, 07:31 AM i think its worth more than the $30.00 mentioned above
agreed the extensions is very poor but search engines couldnt care less about extensions and hosts is a very popular search word |
kohashi 05-05-2003, 07:49 AM 70731 web host
26470 host
23556 web site host
16558 free web host
14059 host pulp wmp
7571 internet host
7291 web page host
6660 ftp host
5672 ebsco host
5226 flash player host
Overture does not show plural. but I would assume at least 90% typed in host, not "hosts" So that leaves you with a couple thousand for your particular word. (from the word host). Competing against .com/net/org and you are probably getting 1/100. So maybe 20 hits? If you are listed. Not to mention every other extension available.
There are enough directories as it is, none of them are very good as they are biased towards advertisers. It is hard to be altruistic in a capitalist society.
Loans.com = single word. .com.
330494 loan
197369 home loan
162100 loan calculator
103628 student loan
96465 personal loan
93379 auto loan
87685 home equity loan
73402 mortgage loan
68616 bad credit loan
Those types of overture numbers. It is easy to see why such a domain is worth a lot. The plural is useful and popular. You do not often talk about hosts. You talk about a specific one generally. There are some rumors that extension does play a role in search engine ranking. I have no evidence to substantiate that, just rumors. Who can really know though? Only the people who have access to the algorithm. |
