View Full Version : IRC Co-Location?

It seems it very hard to find a IRC Co-Location service these days due to the fact that these servers are targets of DoS attacks :( .

Does anyone know a good provider that charges a reasonable price to host a solid IRC/Shell server?

I need this ISP to be able to block out DoS attacks heading to my server (eg. packet filtering).

I'm really just considering giving up looking for co-location and might just get my own fractional T1 from verio or another tier one provider.

Thanks,

Krish

Getting a frac T1 will probablly work best for you. But you might get that cancelled because of DoS Attacks, There is very little defense against DoS attacks if done properlly, but give it a try.

If your T1 gets DoS'd constantly, you may have problems w/ Verio as well. DoS attacks don't only affect the local connection (ie. the frac. T1), but also the upstream.

Yeah, but some uplinks like Internap won't take you off for DoS attacks. Rather, they will filter them for you.

Do you know any other ISP's that will do the same?

well catalog.com doesn't co-lo but we have had an irc server runnin on our dedicate system since last october with no issues. I think they might have changed their policy lately that requires you to get permission first...

they do co-lo if you bought the servers off them. We have several co-Located servers at Catalog since last year :)

Even if the provider sets up a filter at the router, it is really not going to help you/them out.

DoS attacks can suck up all the bandwidth on a pipe if done properly. So, just because the router will keep the traffic away from you, their pipe will still be congested with DoS traffic.

Make sense? Good luck on your search to find a host.

It's strange that some servers get attacked so much more than others.

I've run an IRC box for like 4 years and it's been DoS'd once.

It really is the content that is discussed on them. Like in our case there are only a few channels in use. 99% of the traffic is in a computer chat channel that is heavily moderated. The DoS problems seem to occure when irc servers are setup and not moderated or controled and sketch characters start using them. you get flame wars and then usually someone decides to just DoS the server as revenge.

We use http://www.compspace.net/ for our IRC server. You pay them $15 / month, and they will host an entire IRC server for you.

But they don't seem to like non-US customers, and it looks like a 2 manned organisation (not that I have anything against it, but other people might) .

I guess that makes sense, to a point. The server I run isn't moderated at all though. Yet... no problems. Not that I'm complaining.
