Our site at AffordableHost has been down since yesterday. I can't get a reply from support, and their forum thread has not had a response for about 6 hours.

Anyone else here in the same boat? Anyone know what is going on (other than that thye had a HDD failure)? It's night in the US and I'm rather hosing that they haven't gone to bed!

We had one a week back now on one of our servers. They are not the nicest things to have. Have you checked their support forums?

I have checked them.... a burst of messages and responses a few hours ago, but no responses since then.

We are in limbo, and it hurts. The worst thing is not knowing - if it was bad news and they had to wait for something I'd prefer to know, because we have to assume the worst scenario anyway. But no response to tickets, emails or on the support forums.

try to catch them on AIM

or fax them.

I don't have AIM, but I faxed them earlier. Still absolutely nothing from them. It's looking like they went home to bed. Nice!

try this..but I dont think that they went to bed, if they know that their server has some troubles

Thanks for that... unfortunately, it's either invalid or off the hook. I tried several times (at international rates).

Helpdesk ticket, email, fax, phone... no joy with any. No response at all on any (6 hours since the last forum response).

It certainly looks like they've gone home to bed from here.

According to their server status page, everything is ok - http://www.affordablehost.com/network.shtml

They have/had a 24/7 emergency phone line for such issues, but that number is gone from their site.

Here is their mailing address and you might be able to track down a phone number from that -
Affordable Host, 825 Bond Ave. Ste 211B, Grand Rapids, MI 49501

BTW, the website in your "www" profile here is working for me. :)

No, that's not the site. It's www.help-desk-world.com which is dead as a duck.

I note too that their server status page says "Last updated: Mon Apr 28 02:40:00 2003". Not too much use.

I've already re-pointed the DNS elsewhere, but can't really afford to be down 24-48 hours.... I hope they come into work soon!

The page works however brings up a 404 on my end.

Hi Jenni,
I think you must not panic.
I am sure Tina and the group would be working on solving the matters.
Tina's email address is tpeters@affordablehost.com

They are a responsible group.

Have a great day
Regards
Amar

"Page cannot be found".... which I presume means they haven't restored it or something?

I've tried to ftp again but no joy either.

It's difficult not to panic... this has been down at least a day.

I tried to FTP again but my password/id doesn't work.

I have no idea what is going on.

If you've already "re-pointed the DNS elsewhere", you've just got to relax, as there's nothing else you can do. Grab a coffee and a couple of biscuits, and just relax. :) Your site will start to show from your new host when dns propagation kicks in.

That's true Aussie Bob, but that won't be until tomorrow, which will hurt us, as it's an important site to us.

The scenario I want to is for AffordableHost to sort it out so we are up until the move. In other words... up ASAP.

It looks like it is not a "live" system. and yes I too get not found 404 so they may have problems restoring your site.

I'm sure they'll sort it out ASAP.

JenniH, I can see the site you are talking about from where I am at, could mean that the DNS has propagated at least in some locations or has come back online at affordablehost.

Then again I could be wrong.

Yep. It's pulling up through Affordablehot's server here -
help-desk-world.com IN SOA server: ns17.affordablehost.com

You might find help at the alt.webmaster newsgroup. I believe Tina is a regular there.

We are in the middle of an HDD failure right now. I can assure you that at times like these, no-one is at home in bed (I wish - 2am now), it's all hands on deck.

Sorry to hear it Laurence, they are a major pain in the arse. Thank god for backups!

Indeed. :) And thank god for good admins and a speedy response by the Pegasus team in yanking the server from the rack, racing it up to the build room and putting a new drive in nice and formatted with a clean OS. The server is back in the colo, hooked up and our sysadmin is running the restore. The HDD was not completely dead but it was dying since 6 hours ago. So we can just migrate the data over from that and no-one is none the wiser (apart from 6 hours downtime which isn't too bad for a drive failure).

Yes, it back... thank goodness.

This place is sort of theraputical. I sat for 5 hours with no response at all and nowhere to turn, except here! Thanks for putting up with a whining wench.

Jeez Robert... do you ever sleep? Now wonder your support is so good!

Hi JenniH,

I'm an affordablehost customer, I have not experience any downtime, probably it happens only to the server your site is on.

If total, their service is good, but support in not great indeed. No email/phone/online forum - just support tickets.

Sometimes it helps just to have a bit of a vent and let it all out. :D

Doesn't anyone use RAID?

I'm sure some do.

RAID you say? nu-uh, we dont have any cockroaches here, so no need for it. <grin>

seriously though, it is a fact of life that for some hosts their price structure can not justify raid, redundant power supplies etc. we use raid for some boxes, but not for others. interestingly enough, i i have seen quite a bit of downtime related to raid controllers dying (adaptecs + lots of ram). a bit of a gamble =]
