View Full Version : Ideas?
S-man 06-26-2001, 01:47 PM Is there is a host out there that could provide the hardware and bandwidth to handle a site that gets over 95,000 uniques a day?
It would probably require 2 dedicated servers, your talking maybe dual 1ghz with 1gb ram each.
The host could have their own banner, button, link etc on probably most of the pages if they wanted :)
What are the chances that there is a host that would do this for under $700 a month?
(just wondering, you never know your luck  )
iVersit 06-26-2001, 02:07 PM two things
1)might want to move this post to the advertising section.
2)what kind of site is it? if it is an adult site, .....just move this to advertising section please
S-man 06-26-2001, 02:12 PM Yea, I was thinking about posting in that section, but just wanted some thoughts on whether it may or may not be possible...and no, not an adult site...mainly a discussion board.
:argue:
Get-Hosted.com 06-26-2001, 02:17 PM How much bandwidth does it use?
S-man 06-26-2001, 02:20 PM Give or take 700gigs+
iVersit 06-26-2001, 02:36 PM 700 Gigs? what is the url might i ask?
well i haven't seen too many (even dedicated) Plans out there that come with this much standard. But as you say, you only want to pay $700/mo. which means that (space aside) you will only be paying $1 per GB....I pay more than that, and I'm a webhost, so you will be hard pressed to find a deal that good that is not...."unlimited"...:D
a fair price is $3 - 4 per GB over usage, which, when you go dedicated should be anything over 65GB. figuring in that you should expect to spend around $1905/mo. from a reputable host. Sorry, but the most expensive thing on the Internet is BANDWIDTH, don't let anyone tell you any different.
S-man 06-26-2001, 02:39 PM lol
When I read my post again, I realised that hehehe
I'm just trying to help someone else out here, so I'm not sure on giving the url out :)
How about doubling that... $1400?
Jedito 06-26-2001, 02:40 PM Weinbar offer 500 GB on dedicated at $500.
Maybe You have to drop them a email.
Badone 06-26-2001, 02:43 PM efreeservers.com offers 800Gb for $1200. They are $1.50/gb.
iVersit 06-26-2001, 02:44 PM then weinbar is doing so on the assumed risk to them that you will never use that much traffic. NOBODY gets rates from the upstream provider that are $1/GB. At least no one that I am aware of. Call UUNET, LEVEL 3,MCI, SPRINTLINK and ask them just how much Bandwidth REALLY costs.
<< Im sorry but you dun spam the main boards for any reason, other then the want to get banned :).. just a warning... also, ask the user for his contact email.. if it isnt provided... >>
S-man 06-26-2001, 03:04 PM Appreciate your offer...but the system requirements are a long way away from that :(
MOD EDIT:
Part of previous advertising message
iVersit 06-26-2001, 03:18 PM ooooo, sounds like someone is about to get banned.......
Get-Hosted.com 06-26-2001, 03:39 PM I don't think so... He's not a newbie coming along spamming. I would think/hope they are easier on members who give good input to discussions, and have been here awhile.

am very curious from a designer standpoint about the site getting that many hits if he gets that many per day a few more good hosting design people can not hurt ;)
please give us the url
also not sure where you are located I have a friend who does hosting in Seattle (been in business over 6 years) and can get you in the westin building as a colo they do a lot of adult hosting and others so they have a lot of bandwith on hand ??
just a thought if you are curious email me and I can hook you 2 up
Domenico 06-26-2001, 04:18 PM I'm pretty sure it is NOT a porn site :D
S-man 06-26-2001, 04:26 PM hi,
Honu, again its about prices...
(in regards to the colo idea)
The people running the site aren't the owners of some conglomerate...they are just a group of friends with a forum and regualr updates...its the forum thats the killer.
So you can imagine how much a strain it is on them to maintain such a site.
Again, there is not much design... its simply the content.
Content=king.
Domenico, not sur eif you are being sarcastic, but it is definetly not a porn site.
Strider 06-26-2001, 04:27 PM It is very hard to make any good recommendations without knowing more about your site. Please post a URL or give us more information on what the site is all about.

I think that weinbar is a very reliable Co.
And as all things with bulk buys you get better prices that in small buys.
S-man 06-26-2001, 04:33 PM Hey, I dont mean to be rude, but I've given the stats and requirements for the site.
It's not a porn site of any kind, its not some sort of fileserver, not an mp3 site etc.
Its simply a forum, with a front end.
Again, it is not my site, I'm just wondering if I can get a better deal for some people I know.
The site is completly legal under US laws and does not breach any laws as far as I know.
Again, I dont wish to be rude, but I'd ask you to please respect my wishes.
If anyone is interested in hosting such a site, then I will of course divulge the information to them privately.
Strider 06-26-2001, 04:42 PM I understand and do respect your privacy. I guess my point was there are so many variations and ways to go. Information like what type of content or what type of message board software would only allow us to help you more. In any event, if you would rather not divuldge that, feel free to send me the details via email and I will see if I can make some recommendations privately.
joe52 06-26-2001, 04:43 PM Just a thought, but are they using mod_gzip for this site? If they're not, they could save some serious $$$ by using it, especially if a lot of that bandwidth is text for some sort of forum.
S-man 06-26-2001, 05:13 PM I'm not sure if they do... I just asked them anyhow..will get a reply soon.
Thanks for the reminder.
ffeingol 06-26-2001, 05:25 PM Or if the forum is PHP based (like this one) and you're on at least php 4.0.4 (I believe) then you can do the same compression with PHP (assuming the correct options are compiled in).
I receintly did this on a high volume board (a movie fan site) and it cut the bandwidth by about 60%.

garysmith 06-27-2001, 05:47 AM sounds like S-man is a 1 a b :D
S-man 06-27-2001, 02:39 PM Sounds like I'm a wannabe?
Real mature.. I'm looking around to try and get some people a better deal, if I do, then better for the poeple involved.
Helping people makes me a wannabe?
Sounds like you need to take a mental health check.
Aloha
I am not asking you S-Man to give me the link just so you know ;)
but this thread is making me think HMMMM somethings wrong here
but it gets a lot of views (95,000 uniques a day) not sure if this is uniques pageviews or unique users
but he does not want to give out the url I would think that someone with that many views would want even more traffic
just makes me think why isnt he told his friend about the forum if he is doing a favor wouldn't be getting more users a favor also
just my thoughts ;)
not meant to offend you S-man hope ya can see my point
since this was in General web hosting and not in offers figured this would be OK to say that somethign seems very odd about this post
S-man 06-27-2001, 05:33 PM Well the site is being paid for by a small group of people...you can guess this costs close to around $2000 a month to pay.
There is no revenue being generated on the site, it is pretty much like this site, except it is has a small portal (updates etc), but the main part of it is the forum.
In my personal opinion, there are enough contributers to the site (forum)... posting a link here would surely create simply more traffic.
If it was a business or something that made sales, then sure I'd give the URL :)
Site is completly legal under US laws.
It's not even borderline.
As it is, they are barely managing to pay the current costs, I hope you can understand my not wishing to create more uneccessary traffic.
Aloha
sure understand that but from my biz view why not just shut it down then or get some more investors ???
and looking for sheaper hosting like you are is the best deal for sure
ya might want to take a look at efreeservers there bandwith is super cheap they have custom configurations etc... not sure ya might be able to get 2 machines and have em do round robin or something fairly cheap that would give ay 600 gigs for $600 and addl bandwith is cheap
