No offence, but it never ceases to amaze me that people commit to a server, and the financial committment that goes with it, and have no idea what to do with it!

It's like buying a car not knowing how to drive!

why did you get the server?
webhosting a few sites, running it for a business, game server, some to talk about in the pub ???

Before anyone can help you out we need to know what you want to do/use the server for.

Okay shehzada4 now you are telling us that you don't even have a business with clients, even though you started the dednow bashing thread a few doors down? I really don't think this business is cut out for you, there are a few people here that will buy that server off you, maybe you should place an offer in the dedicated servers offers forum.

I'm amazed, as I see there are many that are too. I'm just floored, and for one won't give you one bit of help just from your actions in starting the previous post.

Good luck, your going to need it.

Please people... don't make the industry look like its run by a bunch of fools. Know what you are doing, before selling. I am sick and tired of seeing "Waa Waa X host crapped out of me". Server administration isnt something you learn in days. It takes months and even years of learning.

whats wrong with my previous post ???..i waited for 7 DAYS for my server when i was promised it to be setup in maximum 48 hrs ???..& for all others I will outsource support very soon . Its just that i want to get my hands dirty in the beginning so i can learn a bit and hopefully manage the server myself in the future..It does not mean in anyway that i will risk my clients business while iam learning. I will outsource the support in one month and then will start accepting clients & hopefully will teach myself basics on managing server in one month ..thanks everyone for the replies

Well for one thing, you have no clue, and I don't mean to say that in a mean way, but you don't, You have no experience in this industry, so you have no knowledge on how things work, when things aren't delivered, and what it involves to build and rack 100+ servers, so instead of going guns blazing I think a "hey, I'm new, how long does it...." or "what is involved and what problems can a provider run into when building a box" would have been a much better post.

If you want to really get your hands dirty, try gardening, then try "maybe" a reseller account, but don't rent a box, slap a sign on the stationwagon and call yourself a host, without any knowledge, I mean any knowledge, otherwise you will lose money, you will burn the fingers of any unsuspecting end user, and tarnish the rep of this industry that much more.

Now *that* sounds sensible. :)

(Makes me ashamed of asking. I was asking so that I could place that name in my mental list of web hosts to avoid. :D )

As i said i may not have the knowledge but its not me who is going to look after customers . I will outsource the support & hire a techie for server adminsitration. I just need to learn basics & as for bashing Dn, i didnt bash. All i said in a polite way was when i was promised 48 hrs why did it take 7 days for my order to get through ?..Yes , i dont know about racking & all.. But when iam promised 48 hrs it means 48 hrs. I hope you get my point. thanks

Okay, I'm starting to sound like an ass myself.

In answer to your question:

When I started out, I started out reselling virtual accounts to my design clients. Then went to a semi-managed VDS solution, and finally moved my way up to dedicated, full controlled by me servers. And to reinforce, your best bet is going to be to step down a notch to a reseller under a reseller, or possibly get a fully managed server. That is what you should do IMHO. I'm sure that isn't an option in your mind, so good luck to you.

I got your point, see the post that you replied to for the answer, you obviously didn't get mine. And FYI, when ever there is a pre-sale, understand that means the boxes still had to be built before delivery, and that was clear to me when I placed my order. But hey, I've only been doing this for 5 years...

I don't wanna sound like a complete moron... but in the beginning this was exaclty the same way for me! I didn't know Linux... and i didn't care. My Cpanel, helped me through all the basics, setting up the server the account (only for my own use... i'm not a webhosting company). Now... i started to learn some linux so i can install some additional software.

Look for driving a car you don't need to know how the engine works... as long as you know how to control it with the pedals!

Do's and Dont's

DO make sure you have intimate knowledge of administering a shared account
DO make sure you have intimate knowledge of administering a reseller account
DON'T get a dedicated server until you have fulfilled the first two criteria

Look for driving a car you don't need to know how the engine works... as long as you know how to control it with the pedals!
That's fine but when you're going to hire the car out to 400 people who RELY on it always working to make their living.... you better be DAMN sure you know how it works and how to fix it or you won't last two minutes.

Fair enough:

Just to name a few, you will need basic knowledge of everything on each of those site above before you can do the simple things.

shehzada4 - Most tasks can be handled directly through CPanel, but you'll need to know a basic knowledge of Linux in order to make the server run smoothly. Get an old computer (333Mhz worked fine for me), install Linux on it, and toy around with it for a month until you've figured it out well enough.

Shezada, if your server has cPanel/Ensim installed you can fool around at the server Admin level to set up hosting plans and reseller plans. IMO it should not be difficult to learn and why dont you ask the people who sold you the server for support [some have paid support for any length of time]

Maybe if you ask this question in http://forum.rackshack.net/ you may find some answers.

Just go testing, but don't rely on cpanel always. It is great yes, and can handle a lot of tasks, but if something goes wrong, you will be stuck.

I would recommend getting the basics of shell as well, installing something (perhaps imagemajick as it's quite easy and there are some good materials) and maybe something like squirrelmail to get the real basics.

Read some posts on forums.cpanel.net. Just do a search on what you need to know and 9/10 it will already be there with a great answer. Don't go posting new topics on things that have been answered, they hate that :)

shehzada4,
I read through this thread 3x already and I still don't understand why your getting a dedicated server. Why spend the money on outsourcing your support and also an admin, when that would be an equvalent to a reseller plan (But cheaper). You stated that you wanted to learn, you can still learn how to do things when your a reseller. Thats how we all started.

I just don't see a point in spending money on all that stuff when you can get it free.

Don't get offended, my suggestions are for your best interests. not mines. Think about it :)

Http://domainorip:2086 = WHM (Web hosting Manager) use the username Root and the password you were given for root. This is where you can do most of the major configurations and adding of accounts and reseller accounts.

You can also download a program called putty (search google putty) and that will allow you to SSH into your server. Its kind of like a dos prompt. I wouldnt touch this area until your more familiar with linux as it might look like MSDOS it is very different.

It would be best to get a 2nd machine at home and download the redhat iso's and install linux your self. That way if you mess something up you are not charged for a restore by your ded host.

Hope thats enough information for you to start getting your self into trouble :)
