View Full Version : Email bouncing when using RaQ3 as mail server?

Hi Guys,

I recently installed POP-Authenticated SMTP Relaying Release 1.2 on my RaQ3 and have been happily sending emails ever since.

However, I have noticed a lot of emails bounce when using my RaQ3 as the server, when they do not bounce if I use my ISP. My ISP is not an option (unfortunately) for sending my emails, so I need to get this problem cured.

Any ideas would be really helpful.....

I get a lot of "no user" type messages, even though I know they exist..

>>> RCPT To:<namechanged@aol.com>
<<< 550 MAILBOX NOT FOUND
550 <namechanged@aol.com>... User unknown

.. and many "deferred" type messages...

***
<namechanged@excite.com>... Deferred: Connection refused by mta.excite.com.
Warning: message still undelivered after 4 hours
Will keep trying until message is 5 days old

Any ideas?

I had this problem also on a raq4.
But then installed :
POP Authenticated SMTP Relaying Release 1.3pre1
and it works fine now..

Ah, thanks. i'll look for 1.3 and see if this helps. Perhaps 1.2 is the problem.

Hmm, I can't seem to find 1.3 anywhere. I don't suppose you have a URL for it do you please?

I believe both of these are no longer offered as they were the kinda-sorta beta versions of the pkg file that is available at Cobalt updates. I probably have the pre1.3 at home (though I'm not home just yet), but if you want it, send me an email and I'll forward it to you if I still have it.

Hi chicken, I installed that pkg you sent me and configured as per the .pdf instructions.

Each and every email i send to any AOL (and lots of hotmail)address seems to be bouncing back as 550 user unknown. This has only been happening since I have had a server (RaQ3) at 4ws, and doesn't happen if I send via my ISP.

Is there something I have done wrong?

I can't say I have an explanation for that, nope. I rarely get an email bounced back, not sure what the deal is. I guess the somewhat obvious solution would be to use your ISP's SMTP server?

Yeah, I know, unfortunately they don't allow me to send emails to my list of clients. They say AT&T *@home* is for homr users only, and as soon as I send a mailshot to my clients they get all flustered!

It's not like I'm spamming or anything, I have a mailing list of 60,000, and every time I use it I only get about 100 remove requests and I can't remember the last time I had someone yell "spam".

Now I'm wondering if those email addresses are just defunct, but AT&T somehow supresses the bounce backs when I use that account, so I am under the impression they are delivered.

I have noticed before when changing ISP's that I'll get 10,000 bounce back when I mail 50,000 with one ISP, and only a handful with others. I don't think I'll ever really find out.

Cheers chicken.
