View Full Version : Any DNS hosting services?
maxbear 06-25-2001, 10:27 PM Dear all,
I am looking for some companies who can provide DNS hosting services. They can allow me to host dns1.mydoman.com and dns2.mydomain.com at their server and allow me to add zones easily. I only know one company which provide this services, that's worldwidedns.net, is there any more?
Because I am currently changing my server to another host and if I do that, I need to change the IP address of the DNS host too. I would like to know is it necessary for me to chage the host IP for each domain name as well? Some register only require you to enter the DNS host name (e.g. dns1.mydomain.com) but some register like networksolutions.com requires you to enter host IP address too. If I change the DNS IP, is it mean I need to change every DNS IP for each domain?
Is there any method so that I don't need to change the DNS IP of each domain? Can I ask my current host to foward the DNS requests to the new DNS server? I don't know how to call it but is it possible?
Thanks for any suggestions.

DavidU 06-25-2001, 10:44 PM I run the free DNS service called EveryDNS.net
You can do it all throught the site. I admit its a bit hard right now but we are working on a whole new site with wizards and other good stuff. We're also bringing up some more boxes in other locations although we haven't had any downtime as of yet. Were just expanding for redundancy and safety and security.
If you need any help, I'll help here or via support@everydns.net
www.everydns.net (http://www.everydns.net)
thanks,

As you are looking, you might want to see if the DNS hosting service has name servers in geographically different areas. Depending upon the reliability you need, having two name servers in the same NOC may not be a good solution.
ckpeter 06-26-2001, 09:28 AM Try UltraDNS.com. It's a paid service, but seems very reliable.

Before starting everyDNS I used UltraDNS.
They are fantastic but are very expensive.

haha, I've been doing DNS and sysadmin for quite some time. This new DNS service has been up an running since beta (three months) with no downtime and few bugs. I think I have ironed out all the bugs and of those none have even come close to being showstoppers.
You are welcome to use our DNS Service for free, I was just letting you know it will only get better. I host almost all of my stuff on there now and what isn't, is being converted. Plus the fact that we aren't big yet, I can walk you through almost everything.
If you do want to wait a couple weeks, our new site will launch that offers a whole bunch more stuff. Wizards and batch processing.
The more feedback we get, the better we are.

Do you have a link describing your networking locations? Something along the lines of: http://www.zoneedit.com/doc/network.html
DavidU 06-26-2001, 05:46 PM Mike,
First of all, I would be very surprised if ZoneEdit really had all those locations. I am not saying they are lying, I am saying I just don't think we have the full picture.
DNS is critical and EveryDNS takes it very seriously.
Here's what we have and what we are putting up. And when I say putting up I mean it's almost a done deal, not like something "we're looking into." It's happening RSN.
Two machines in San Diego colocated at Verio's new NOC on a totally underused network. And a third machine coming online at UPnetworks in Northern California. In the Fall I think I'll have a machine up in St. Louis and then we'll go for one in the east
I also run an IRC server on one of my other boxes and IRC is real picky with disconnects (even for a second) and it has never complained. Verio has all the backup, UPS, multi-providers, etc, etc, etc...but we are still bringing up other machines just in case.
We're not going to go crazy on geographic diversity but we'll be comfortable, secure, and reliable (which I feel we are already)
They say you get what you pay for, but it doesn't apply in our case. You pay nothing, you get fast, free, stable DNS.

mlovick 06-26-2001, 06:24 PM Hi DavidU,
I dont wish to appear funny - but the boxes and colo costs money, why are you offering the service 'free' - what is the catch, I believe that you do not get nothing for nothing.
When you spend money with Verio colocating your boxes you wish to make profit I am sure.
This sounds like a great service, and I am sure a lot of people would purchase this product, but the word 'free' makes me uneasy.
I mean this in good faith :)
mlovick 06-26-2001, 06:29 PM Ok now I see it - Donations
So you are a charitable fellow :D

Totally valid question. All I can say is that money truly isn't the goal in this project. I have enough to fund it for quite some time and our hosts and futures hosts are being quite generous with their time, space and as you know, DNS uses hardly any bandwidth.
If you look at the donations, we have recieved like nine or so (one being me and one being my mom and dad!) So I am not planning to retire on this. *grin*

That web page is a bit old. But do the traceroute for yourself...
ns1.zoneedit.com
ns2.zoneedit.com
ns3.zoneedit.com
ns4.zoneedit.com
ns5.zoneedit.com
Report back the locations you find....
(I use their servers ns3 and ns4)
Christoph 06-26-2001, 08:25 PM If I would use a service like the one DavidU is offering - How can I find out how to setup a CNAME or A Record? Is there an online guide somewhere?

Well first of all, I can help at support@everydns.net
note, all the complexity is because we just made a rough interface to DNS. We are currently creating nice wizards, templates, and tutorials for a new interface. If you want to help beta test it, let me know because we'll be coming online in the next couple of weeks.
