View Full Version : Expiring domain monitoring script...

Hello --

I have my eye on a few great domain names that are either about to expire, or in the "waiting period" before they are re-released into public domain (as if that will happen, knowing NSI hehe).

Problem is, I don't have time or will to do a whois search on the names like 50 times a day to make sure I get to them as soon as they are available... I am looking for a Perl or PHP script I can install on my server which will repeatedly query (cron) Whois at a set interval for the domains I want, and send me an email notification the instant it finds that a monitored domain name has become available.

Thanks in advance. Also if you can recommend an AFFORDABLE (hehe) or free service that can do this, that would be fine.

Please post here, ICQ, or email (see profile).
Thanks!

I just signed up with snapnames (http://www.snapnames.com) on Sunday, I can let you know what happens with regard to their service and support as time ticks by. I do have to say that their pre-sales e-mail replies were lightning fast and intelligent.

Still waiting to see if snapnames is successful with my targeted acquisitions :uhh:

I just noticed this morning that NewtworkSolutions is now back-ordering domain names like SnapNames and for the same fee, wonder if all registrars will soon be offering this service. And ummm, still no movement on the SnapNames targets :)

Interesting....

I went to NSI to see what you were talking about - when I followed through on their search for the domain (step 1) it goes right to SnapNames.com!

When I go to my Snap Names account, it now shows Network Solutions as the ONLY registrar available to choose from in the drop down list. I guess don't have a problem with that if it's my only option, though I hate the idea of paying $35/yr for their shoddy service hehe. Does your account still show other registrars, or is this a complete change in the SnapNames service?

I've only signed up thus far for the SnapShot service.... do you think the SnapBack service will work? (I don't want to get conned out of my $49 if I can help it hehe).

Thanx

I signed up last Sunday before their rate hike and purchased 2 SnapBack's using the registrar openSRS, the DNS info set up for me for my SnapBack's is:
ns1.interimnameserver.com 204.107.85.253
ns2.interimnameserver.com 204.107.85.254

Not sure this is openSRS or register.com's but to be honest it doesn't matter to me as long as I secure the domain names. I was surprised to see that Enom and openSRS have been excluded from the registrar list, I was looking forward in working with openSRS. NetworkSolutions can be complicated to work with, but you can always transfer out after 60 days.

I'm sending an e-mail to SnapNames support now and will let you know what they say.

I know the existence of software that run in windoze, I can't remember the name now, but it check for expired domains or near to expire.
I'll search in my HDs .. maybe I can found it :)

Heard from SanpNames support and was told if you visit SnapNames through NSI, then NSI is the only registrar option you have. I visited SnapNames not by way of NSI and only saw NetworkSolutions on their "choose registrar" button also... ... Not sure what to make of this, but it could be a simple glitch that needs to be adjusted since I was told by that we have registrar options other than just NSI.

Will keep you posted.

I just cleared my cache/cookies and it still only says NSI - so that's not the problem :)

Now you have the option of either using openSRS, eNom or Networksolutions

An interesting article (http://domainguidebook.com/Guides/goldrush-III.html) from the SnapNames newsletter.

Has anyone ever bought a script from this site? I've looked through it a few times, and there's a lot of stuff that seems a little too good to be true.

Yeah, I've seen it before too, and would love to hear from someone who's used it before.
I tried promoting their affiliate program (you're supposed to be able to earn access to the scripts if you send enough traffic) but the affiliate management script is terrible and won't accept the password that I am 100% sure I used to sign up. There seems to be no affiliate support and no password reminder.

He he he :)

Actually I have come up with a list of around 100 (or heck it could even be 200+ I've stopped counting a long time ago)... 99% are unregistered. It's the 1% that are (hehe) that I wish to keep an eye on.

dotster has a list of some expired domains ... I don't see anything good ... but this expired domain got me really wonder:

U0V1NLXTC7F5A42V1RBX-TIV.COM

 Why would one want to register such a complete non-sense? No wonder it's expired already :)

cheers,

I have a shell script that does just that. I run it through cron and it checks a long list of names every so often. I have it set up to automatically email in a registration form for the domain though but if your registrar of choice won't take email registrations you can just change that email address to your own. It also notifies you when a domain is registered; I have it set to page my cell phone so it's rather convenient. :)

I'll see if I can't get this cleaned up a bit so it's not so customized just for me. Send me an email through the forum and I'll give it to you for free.

I was *burned* by superscripts... they took my money 11/10/01, and without even so much as asking for support, my membership suddenly disappeared when I tried to log on 1/5/02.

Also, from the scripts i have been able to use (the ones that actually do run), they've been disappointing...

If anyone wants to know the details, PLEASE feel free to ask. I have a string of messages from the last two weeks documenting what I'm saying. If they do ever fix my account, I'll retract the part about being burned, but as it stands, I paid them 11.10.01 for a LIFETIME membership, and now am not a member. Maybe it was for the lifetime of his cat, or memory or who knows.

Read the ramblings at http://www.perlcoders.com/truth/ for a glimpse of who you'll be doing business with if you do decide to plop down the cash for a membership like I did. It doesn't flatter either party, but it does make you wonder who actually did write the scripts.

Autonic isn't all it's cracked up to be either by the way.

I believe that is a domain name containing foreign characters (such as Chinese, Japanes, etc.).

Superscripts used to have a band site over at mp3.com. It was linked from their main site. If anyone can find it please post it. I listened to some of their recorded songs, and all I can say is http://www.freakygamers.com/smilies/s2/contrib/sarge/Paranoid_anim.gif http://www.freakygamers.com/smilies/s2/contrib/sarge/Paranoid_anim.gif
