View Full Version : Best Colocation
thirdwatch430 06-25-2001, 06:02 PM Who provides the best and cheapest colocation?? I want a server from efreeservers.com, but I don't want to spend that much on bandwidth, plus I don't need 400gb, I need something like them, but lower bandwidth plans.
Planet Z 06-25-2001, 07:48 PM My guess is the way efreeservers makes money is with their high bandwidth plans. Their average user gets the 200GB plan for $299 /mo thinking it's a great deal, only $1.5 per GB! But then they end up only using 50GB. Which works out to be $6 per GB. They wouldn't make money if they sold you 50GB of bandwidth @ $1.5/GB.
thirdwatch430 06-25-2001, 08:02 PM Yeah, I know....however, can you get a free server and not use them as your co-location, because if you can I can get 400gb/month at only $200/month. That is much better than efreeservers. But I am using this for a company, and I don't think we will only be using 50gb hosting a lot of sites. I just want to get all the pros and cons.
sbrad 06-26-2001, 01:05 AM Yes, they provide co-location also.
As for "cheaper deals", keep in mind that at most places you have to pay for rack space AND a setup fee. Not so with efreeservers.
sbrad 06-26-2001, 01:07 AM Oh, sorry. Just re-read the question, and noticed you wanted to know if you could get the server for free and not co-locate there.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure they are just in business because they want people to have servers of their own (read a little bit of sarcasm, but not enough to make you mad).
thirdwatch430 06-26-2001, 09:27 AM I e-mailed them about it, you have to ahve bandwidth with them for 20 months until they ship your server. I will be signing up, but not now..I need some $$$ first ;)
ksstudio 06-26-2001, 10:28 AM We have just place an order for EFS Windows 2000 server. Waiting patiently for the new server to setup by their engineer.

Aloha
congrats on your new toy ;)
please keep us posted ;)
I am very curious about going with them although not quite sure yet ??
ksstudio 06-26-2001, 08:29 PM Just received an e-mail from them containing the contract, what they wrote in the e-mail:
Once all the paperworks and billing information have
been received, we can have your new server ready for you in 5-6 days.
I thaught it only take 1-2 days to setup as stated in their site.
thirdwatch430 06-27-2001, 09:46 AM They just want to make sure your CC and everything goes through before giving you the server. Maybe they are backed up too???
ksstudio 06-27-2001, 10:16 AM The funny thing is I don't need to submit any CC info during the online signup process. But I need to fill an authorization form to charge to my CC together with the contract.
thirdwatch430 06-27-2001, 11:04 AM I thought that was wierd too, not paying when you sign up...I didn't sign up but, when I checked it out there was no CC information.
Planet Z 06-27-2001, 11:45 AM An online form with your credit card info isn't proof that you agreed to the charge. But a signed authorization form faxed/mailed to them with your info and signature agreeing to the charge is valid proof. We do this on ALL dedicated & colo servers, just to be safe. At least this way they have some evidence to prove they had a valid reason to charge your credit card.
sbrad 06-27-2001, 12:51 PM I've worked at more than one hosting company/data center, and now own a hosting company. I have NEVER charged a card on co-location or dedicated services before the contract was completed. Anyone who does is asking for trouble, because these things can, and sometimes DO fall through.
Not only that, but it has been my experience that many people like to pay for these services by check.
vintagestars 06-29-2001, 01:07 AM thirdwatch430,
check out www.*****.com - they have what you're looking for. i personally use this host and highly recommend them.

(included: a screen capture of some of their plans)
sbrad 06-29-2001, 01:18 AM What I can't fathom is that, by the time I am posting this, 2 people have already downloaded the screenshot of *****'s services.
No offense, vintagestars, but your ***** experience truly does differ from most people's.
