sup my peoples...

ok im whut u would call...hmm, cheap.
I currently pay $10.00 a month for my site, most traffic comes from the UBB...2200 members, 70,000 posts in just three months since opening....
and suddenly my server is falling apart...

im wondering if i move to VB, with gzip compression, the backend it has, and just being ran on php instead of bloated perl coding...will this dramitcally change my server speed, and allow me to postpone moving to a new server?
or is the VB message board switch just minimal?

if this is any conselation we get 500-550k of page views monthly....

Best Reguards. thanks MjM

Many of my boards that I have switched have seen drastic differnces in bandwidth bills and server loads..

Just make sure the server your on has plenty of ram so it can run MySql at peek performance...

VBulletin is generally more efficient than UBB.

Here's what your problem will likely be, since you're on a shared host. Many shared hosts limit the amount of mySQL connections a user can have. So if your board has 30+ concurrent users, your host may have a problem with you having too many concurrent mysql connections open.

Then ya just put persistant connections to 0 in your config.php..

Switching from UBB to vB will not save you bandwidth unless you're enabling the gzip option (which, if you're moving to vB, you should turn on). Speed on your site would also generally increase with vB.

On the other hand, if you don't have any money to buy vB right now, you may want to look into geting your host to install mod_gzip to decrease bandwidth. Perl code is defintely not bloated. Coded right, it's extremely quick :)

Best wishes.

Hehe, coded correctly is the key word there :D

If you have a current license of UBB and have members area axxs, you could prolly sell the license for $100 and spend $83 of that for a vB. You'll have to clear the sale with IP ofcourse....

Not every BB needs a dedicated server, where he is now with just 70,000 posts he should just need a shared, if he gets a great influx of people, yeah a dedicated is nice.....

they are the good ones, lol

sell stupid things you find at walmart for twice their worth but with your name on it.

that will make people happy.

Get a box of Tide [detergant] and put a sticker with your sites logo on there and call it a collectors item, i bet youll sell like 50.

But yeah, stupid things may not sell for everyone, but there is always some poor sap that will but just about anything.

and you only need so much for a dedicated host. :-)
