View Full Version : Should i choose shared hosting or dedicated server??
pcgod 06-25-2001, 04:54 AM I god very confused now, I use a vbb 2.0 forum,
My site had about 2000 members, usually will have 60~90 online,
on most busy time 90~130 online, like Sunday and Saturady.
I see very good shared hosting, but i am very troubled that i should use then , or to use a dedicated server, because i hate
move and move one day ,
Give me a hand if you usually have 60~90 online like my site,
what kind of server do you use ??
allera 06-25-2001, 08:08 AM We host a UBB board that has thousands of users on it. I'm not sure how many are on at one time, but from what I can see on my bandwidth monitor, there must be quite a few. vBB should be much easier to host because it's php and should consume less resources.
Any good server should be able to handle it, assuming the server isn't heavily loaded.
Do you know how many resources your vBB takes up, how much bandwidth is consumed, and how much diskspace is needed? Those are the factors to consider when determining whether to go dedicated or stay virtual.
Maybe we can give you better answers when those questions have been answered. :)
By the way, why are you thinking about going dedicated? Has your present host said something about your vBB being a burden on a shared server?
Walter 06-25-2001, 09:19 AM With >100 users concurrent I would go dedicated.
Most shared servers have implemented a limit of ~40-60 mysql connections per account.
tecton 06-25-2001, 09:31 AM go dedicated with that many users

I can't answer about how much resources my vbb takes up, but i can answer i will need about 20~25 gb bandwidth one month
and it's because just start.
My host it just only say i have so many people online at one time will let server be down.
After i used it one day well almost down many times one day .
Just like tencton and Walter said " go dedicated" ,and
too many people also liked them to say.
Now,my most big problem is so many webserver i should
select whose, i'd really very very troubled.:bawling: :bawling: :bawling:
Some sites are very expensive but some sites are too
cheaper to order.
I just wanna say "God bless me .................."

Yea, you may indeed need to find a dedicated server. I had forgotten about the whole MySQL part of it. :) Sorry about that.
Good luck to you!

I am in the same situation now.
I hava also perl base message board - YaBB Gold Sp.1.1 with 700 users, 1300 threads nad my community is growing.
I have about 60 -70 simultaneous users on my board.
Last month I had used 50 Mb of disk space and 25 Gb bandwidth.
My hoster emailed me with warning and suggest dedicated server.
Actually I don't need MySQL databases.
But I don't know what to do.
Why shared hosting with 30 or 50 Gb bandwidth monthly is not enough for my board?
What is the difference between dedicated and semi-dedicated plans?
and which one I must to choose?
@pcgod Are ypu still at WHT? What king of hosting did you choose for your message board?
PapaSurf 10-09-2003, 07:08 AM With the right OS and customer support you can do that on a shared box.

but what is right OS in that case?
PapaSurf 10-22-2003, 05:03 PM FreeBSD, of course :D
inteltechs 10-22-2003, 05:10 PM dedicated server or VPS solution would be my choice. :)
mindless 10-22-2003, 05:10 PM it would be better to go with a cpane/whm dedicated server
PapaSurf 10-22-2003, 05:36 PM How will adding a control panel to a server, especiall shared, increase performance? Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that's what this thread was about.
freak 10-22-2003, 07:35 PM Well, for one, both of you can share a dedicated server...
