Since everyone started out as a newbie..

How much are you paying for you very first PAID HOSTING ACCOUNT? and when was it?

Begining of last year, my first hosting account cost $14.9 monthly, $20+ setup, pre-pay bi-yearly, 50MB, **unlimited bandwidth**, .. can't remember the rest but always have difficulty login webmail, connect ftp, very slow page loading.. on a second look, i felt like being ripp.. :(

This might not count, but...

I had changed local ISP's years and years and years ago, after my former ISP was broken into. Also, and right before that, I had gotten free web space with my account (well, most ISP's did that at the time then too, but) and when I was starting to upload my files, I noticed some large image file. I downloaded it to view and I used some DOS program (VPIC?) to view it, which is displayed the image instantly... I was unfortunate enough to see some really horrible image of a (I'd guess) 800+ pound woman, fully nude, fondling herself. I called the ISP and complained about how I was never going to be able to eat again in my life and asked how that image could have possibly been in my account directory, when it wss just set up and a unique user name. Well, they had no explaination (they also ran a porn site on the side, I found out later).

Nonetheless, I changed ISP's and has an account with free web space on the new ISP. After a few months, I ended up helping them out, doing designs, programming, etc. and I was given basically full access to run their new Linux system as I wished. I did pay for hosting years later though, when I finally needed to, and that was a while ago -- but was probably a 150 Meg account, 15 Gig's bandwidth a month if they, 20 POP emails, Perl, telnet, SSH, C compiler access, PHP, MySQL and all the other good stuff, for I think $14.95/mo. Their plans also said 8 GIG's bandwidth, but they always were okay and never charged more for up to 12 or 15 Gig's, since they always had enough to spare for everyone's account, which was kind of them. I ended up working for them actually, so I only paid for like a month. I've been having sites hosted for a very long time and I don't recall ever really having to pay other than that one time -- which was my first paying experience and not a bad one.

Oh, and they offered the forst 30 days hosting for free, without asking for money first. An all around good host.

My first paid account was with Linuxwebhost.com around 3 years ago... when they were a very good host. I never emailed em much... but always got good fast responses, now it is about a 1 week response... my account was still open with them a few months ago and was just sitting there on an IP, so I canceled it, and they kept saying it was canceled and kept on billing me. Finally got it sorted out... but with one week responses, sorting something out can take quite awhile.

I remember I used to pay $18 for a shared account.. later on it became 60 as the site grew, and before I realized what happened, bang! I'm paying $500 per month for a dedicated server.

I got my first virtual account account about 3 1/2 years ago. It was $20/mo for 50MB of space. At the time, it was a pretty good deal. I left after 3 months when I got a colo server, and they ended up going belly-up the month after. Good timing, eh?

My first account was with (what used to be) interspeed.net and is now hispeed.com. It was their unix plan for $19.95 a month, 300MB I think, and "unlimited" bandwidth. Luckily I never ran afoul of that. :D No PHP, no MySQL, just CGI (in a crappy long-ass wrapper URL...).

I was with them for 3 years, for 2 years as myname.interspeed.net and then for a year as myname.com.

My first hosting account was with Hostingplans.com. I got suckered into a "one-time" $300 payment for a "lifetime account". It had 300MB of space and I'd never have to pay again. Well, as most people know, you get what you pay for. It only took a month before I couldn't get in contact with anyone at that company and it took another nine months for me to get my money back. I even had to get my state Attorney General involved  since they basically took my money and ran. That's when I got my money back. Now, hostingplans.com is out of business... too bad!!!

My first hosting account was with Webcom, and it cost $9.95 a month, plus I got the first month free. That was in early '97, they had really good service at the time.

Ok, i give you all permission to laugh at me for this one. My first hosting account was with SimpleNet.com before they became yahoo. I had the "Unlimited web space and bandwidth" account for 19.99 a month im sure it was. I had over 13 gigs on that account and for the most part it was unreachable through the web :P

$8.25 / month icom hosting in 1997. Before that I used the free space provided with my dialup internet service.

Our hosting now costs over $50,000 /year, figures.....

$10 a month for a Dreamhost account way back before their small plan even had a cgi-bin. It was about as vanilla as you could get.
