View Full Version : I look for a reliable host
arabnity 06-22-2001, 04:04 PM Hi all.
This is what I am getting from my current host for 35$/year:
25 mb storage, 1 GB traffic per month, unlimited pop email accounts, email forwarding, auto-transponders, mail lists, mysql, your own cgi-bin, ssi, secure server setup, frontpage support, php, protected directories, ftp, e-commerce, statistics and a powerful control panel.
No advertisements, re-directs or pop-up windows.
They say they have 99.9% uptime, but that is very far from true.
Any better offers? I don't mean necessarily cheaper: I do consider quality-price ratio.
I want someone reliable at a moderate price. I can't afford much at the moment, but things are going to change in the future.
I am studying to become a web developer and I am beginning to do some work for others. If I find a reliable and honest host I am likely to stick with it in my profession. Just something to think about...
Thank you for your time,
arabnity - www.arabnity.com
kickster 06-22-2001, 04:26 PM 1 GB of transfer and you expect great service too !
Try F5hosting.com or futurequest.net both provide great service and uptime however you have
to fork out way more than what you are paying now. FQ offers 20 GB for almost $50 but you wont find
better support anywhere on earth. F5 has much lower prices but they are new.
If you need 1 GB transfer then you must be looking at a dedicated since no share hosting in their right mind
would allow 1 GB of transfer.
Once again for your profession I highly suggest Futurequest.net They also have a great forum to help you learn more about running servers, scripts and etc...
sweethorizons 06-22-2001, 04:52 PM I'm not a webhost or anything but you can get a domain and hosting for about 28.95 and very good service. Here's my suggestion transfer your domain to www.godaddy.com then its 8.95 per year and then get a host like www.hosturbo.com which is 19.95 a year. So its 28.95. I have both services and they are excellent. Good luck with your school.

Hi kickster, as a matter of fact I doubt I need 1GB: I merely copied the info from their website.
As far as "expecting" is concerned, on the other hand, well, I expect what I am promised and what I have paid for - no matter how much. It's a question of principle: don't bloody promise what you can't afford to promise. It makes sense, doesn't it? Well, it does to me and this is a rule I try to stick to, both for myself and when dealing with others.
Changing subject, I'll check out the links you gave me, from what you say they should be really good. Thanks for the input.
bye for now,
arabnity

I think I am the one who isconfused. For 1GB per month, you told him to look for a dedicated server?

sweethorizons 06-22-2001, 07:34 PM now you have me confused?

f5hosting.com 06-23-2001, 12:52 AM Um...most hosts offer upwards of 15-30 GIGABYTES per month in transfer...1 GB is a basic plan at WORST! Our basic plan offers 5 gb of transfer a month and that is on special this month at 7.00 dollars (www.f5hosting.com/specials.htm)
i think you might have been thinking 1 GB of disk space.
John_rwx 06-23-2001, 02:22 PM Excuse me for the double posting above. For some reason my initial post didn't show up on my end, so I posted again.
Concerning the previous post by f5hosting, I think 2-8 gigabytes/month transfer is more typical for most hosts.
MCHost-Marc 06-23-2001, 03:38 PM Most plans are between 1-5GB's per month (even 500MB's is enough for most sites) ...also most people would prefer a host that offers realistic plans instead of a host that offers 30GB's for $20.
bteeter 06-23-2001, 10:28 PM Reilability is our #1 concern. All of our plans include a 99% unconditional uptime guarantee.
Our least expensive plan is only $4.95 per month, and includes most common web development tools such as Perl and PHP. More full featured plans are available with MySQL, subdomains, and much more.

Take care,
Brian
f5hosting.com 06-23-2001, 10:35 PM Well, I am sorry that you think that our plans are unrealistic... But they are realistic and we have customers who are using over 20 gigs per month.
So, while most hosts are ripping people off by charging them 20 bucks a month for 1-5 gigs of transfer, we actually PROVIDE the 20-30 gigs that are needed by these sites.
