View Full Version : Contract Security Work

Hi,

I do contract systems administration and security work as well as consulting. I have plenty of refrences and examples if needed. I currently run a free DNS service called www.everydns.net and I provide free dns services to people on the internet.

I just quit my job and have opened myself up for serious security and system administration work.

I prefer to mostly work with linux however I can work on other unices.

When it comes to locking down a machine and getting it configured how you want I can do it.

If you have any questions, let me know. If not, at least pick up some DNS service at everydns.net and let me know how I can improve it.

David,

I think it would help if you outlines which products you have experience with.

Thanks.

Hmm....without posting a resume...here's a short list.

Apache -- From source -- with optimizations from increasing MAX_THREADS to slimming down your apache binary. Including various modules from the standard mod_php, mod_perl, mod_ssl (or apache-ssl) as well as various weird ones like mod_mp3, mod_repository (for large image archives), and some other lesser known mods. This includes standalone apache setups as well as those in a vhosted environ.

Postfix -- I can setup postfix but keep reading....(with mailman, etc)

Qmail -- Basically, I find qmail to be the GOD of all mail servers especially in a virtually hosted environment. I can setup it up with qmailadmin which is a web based admin for clients OR admins to create and/or manage accounts. It's fast, stable, and SECURE.

The rest is all just the generic sysadmin stuff from DNS, to writing shell scripts, perl scripts, whatever it takes. I've even been known to jump onto a cisco router to fix IOS problems when needed.

I take security very seriously. I know how to setup good IP rules in a cisco. I can setup an ipf firewall in BSD, and ipchains firewall in the 2.2 linux series or an iptables firewall w/state full packet inspection if using the 2.4 series. I can strip kernels, recompile kernels, etc.

I have some good refrences. Some people have me go to the colo-facility to work, some have me do it remotely and some send me their rack to setup and then I install it or send it back.

Hmm...what else...Do _you_ have any questions?

Oh yeah, I coded and run everydns.net with one of my buddies...so I know PHP w/mysql and I _can_ do webdesign if needed but I rarely will.

I guess that's a good overview -- what'cha think?

Stephen,

That's very true. One area in which I lack some experience is in dealing with NETWORK design and security. I spent this weekend learning with a friend of mine who used to be a System Administrator (high up) at Earthlink. I learned quite a bit about scaling massive architectures. Not something I'm ready to tackle, but in a year or two, I am sure I'll not only want to, but I'll be ready to.
