Hi,
I'd like to get one of these Raq's because they are so cheap, but I'm a bit concerned. I really do not care about their control panel and everything. I will be using my own Apache build, I won't be using sendmail nor Bind (Highly prefer Tinydns and Qmail). These are some quite major changes and I'm asking, just to make sure, if this will cause trouble with the system. I know cobalt has its own linux distibution and I'm wondering if it's flexible enough to let me move things around without becoming unstable..
Thank you,
Cedric Veilleux,

First, please put your URL in a signature. Second, why do you want to use a RaQ again? I understand the price thing, but you could probaly get an inexpensive non-RaQ linux box. Hardware wise, they are pretty good, nothing you'd write hom to mother about, but dependable enough. Processor is an AMD K6/2 - 300 or 450... I dunno, seems like you could find something for about the same price, but I'd think it would work if you wiped it and installed what you want as well.

Yeah, I know. I just built a box, for colocation at dtwebworks. Although it costed me quite a lot, took me a lot of time, and those 1U case are expensive.
Although, where can I get a 100 GB for $99 offer like 4webspace has?
I've seen posts about troubles with a raq when making software changes. Especially with the control panel which, like I said, I do not care about. I guess it would not cause troubles like you said to wipe it and install what I want, but I'd like to have the opinion of someone who played with it, just to make sure.
thank you

Stay away from the cobalts unless your going to use their control panel, they use crummy components like amd processors, you can get 4x better 1u servers for less than a bottom of the line cobalt.
Aloha,
if you are going to colocate a box
you might think of this
http://www.ubid.com/cat/get_cat_page.asp?CatID=1002
they have some servers
that are going for a bout $629-669
details:
Dell PowerApp Web100 Pentium III 750MHz 256MB
9GB HD/24X CD-ROM/NIC/No OS
so basically you get a great 1u case and a good base unix box that will blow a way a RaQ
the HD in it is a Quantum V scsi 160
I just got one from the fedex Driver
Shipping to Hawaii 89 bucks OUCH
anyway
I took some pics of the inside and would be glad to post em up if ya want to see it
I figured ad 256 more megs a second HD and for $1000 ya have a killer little box or make it $1500 and ya can have a killer box with a good raid card
I may pick up another one and run em in a small clustered setup for $2000 bucks would be pretty cool
I can get colocation for $25 a 1u space and 25 gigs to start at $3 a gig so for $100 a month for bandwith and rack rent
if I do the cluster base is $ 125 a month
figure the machines last 3 years thats $27 a month per machine
