View Full Version : web-based email recommendations?
amalgam 06-21-2001, 10:30 PM Which established hosts have the best webmail (browser based email)?
I have seen and used a few different programs, and here's what I want:
1. The webmail URL should have my domain name in it. REQUIRED.
2. The user should only have to type in his username, not "username@mydomainname.com". REQUIRED
3. It should be Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer compatible. REQUIRED
4. I prefer a webpage to input username and password, instead of a pop-up window (is that java?). PREFERRED.
This isn't a hard requirement, but my users/friends will be more comfortable with a webpage.
5. No mention of any other company on the webmail login page, not even the hosting company.
PREFERRED
I'd really like to to be able to put my own graphic on the webmail login page.
Do any other (established) hosts have good webmail systems? Names , please.
Do any allow placement of *my* graphic on the webmail login page? .....or a customized webmail page?
Is there a very, very simple-to-set-up webmail program that I can put on my website (for use with my website's pop email accounts)?
Do any have secure webmail (https) available?
thnx :)
Rewdog 06-21-2001, 10:33 PM Well, everyone.net is free, and is remote hosting. It has half your banners, half thiers, and is fully customizable. We use it at emegaweb.com if you want to see how it works. the pop ups are pretty annoying though
amalgam 06-21-2001, 10:48 PM Thanks for the info, but this will be for a small non-commercial site.
It will be small enough that my costs won't be significant, and I don't have plans to put any advertisement on it. The email accounts will be given to friends and co-workers and such. I just want the webmail to look simple and uncluttered, so that they will be happy to use it. I want it to be in stark contrast to the clutter of hotmail.
BTW, I posted this because I ran into items #2 and #3 with a hosting provider I signed up with last month. I'd like to be better informed when I move the site.
Thanks for the info.
Michael-MS 06-21-2001, 10:48 PM Instead of searching around for a web host that offers the exact web mail program that you're looking for, I would suggest installing one yourself.
Most of them would be customizable as well.
Personally I would suggest Epostalservice:
http://www.transmission7.com/cgi-bin/prodemo/epostalservice.cgi
You would have to purchase it from them for $199 (price valid until June 30th). If you need help installing it, I'd be glad to help you. I just installed it for a customer's site and the installation went very smoothly. We had it up and running in about 10 minutes.
The only thing that it requires is Perl... no special mods or databases. Of course you can view their site for all of the details.
Hope this helps.. :)
Rewdog 06-21-2001, 10:53 PM if you were to host it on your machine, www.cgi-resources.com has a batch of them you could look through, many are free.
Personally, I don't like neomail, but it does allow users to access their pop accounts through their browsers.
For personal use, I have a login form that lets me connect to my pop accounts, everyone.net accounts, and also to Hotmail. The domain name are selected from a drop down menu. It's not hard to do this.
E-mail me if you need help creating your own login script. No charge.
Gossamer Mail (http://www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/webmail/) might work for you. It is template based so you can insert your own images/text into the templates. The admin program lets you change a lot of the global text so you can brand it to your domain.

Chas
Dogma 06-22-2001, 11:38 AM lotsa money!!!! :(
tcmonica 06-22-2001, 12:01 PM i know netcoz.com has a excellent web-based system setup for clients (i an one :)
it's located at http://mail.netcoz.com
cheers!
or you could try searching http://www.thecgisite.com for a script of your own.
amalgam 06-22-2001, 01:37 PM thanks for the various responses. I'm not a programmer, so maybe I should not have asked for "very, very simple" installation program suggestions. I also don't plan on paying a couple hundred dollars for a webmail program, for my website on a $12 / month hosting plan. My webmail requirements aren't that hard to meet, IMO. I just need to find the hosts that can satisfy them.
FYI, I exist in the world of under $25/month shared hosting.
I actually have a site with webmail that's fairly good for my purposes. Here's what the interface looks like http://hostmatters.com/up/nph-mr.cgi. The webmail doesn't have a few features that I'd like, but it meets my requirements (see my first post). The interface is simple, uncluttered, and free of advertising. I don't plan on moving that domain/website from hostmatters. One of my other domains with a different host *will* be moved because of the webmail system.
I hope to have several hosts to choose from (that meet my webmail requirements).
Again, thanks for the responses.
Michael-MS 06-22-2001, 01:44 PM That email program is offered by Alabanza. All you have to do is find a host who is on their servers.
elsmore1 06-22-2001, 02:52 PM Actually that program is a free script available (last time I checked) at mailreader.com, and there are a number of hosts that use it in addition to Alabanza based hosts.
What features were lacking in that interface that you wanted? It can be customized to probably suit your needs entirely.
patrickw 06-23-2001, 03:38 PM The simplest way to go would probably be to use Everyone.net's plug in email. I've used it on three different sites and have no complaints. It was mentioned in a previous reply, so there's no need in me ranting about them.
Since you said you're looking for a simple way to offer email, Everyone.net may be what you're needing. The downside will be the advertising - including a popup on the login page.
Most hosts will let you run about any CGI or PHP script that you want. Perhaps you can find someone willing to install and customize the script of your choice for you on your existing account.
