View Full Version : Hostsave nightmare ...

To summarize what has happened so far (in chronological order):

- November 21, 2000
Hostsave charged my Visa $79.23 for 1 year of service on my domain

- June 6, 2001
I received an email from billing@hostsave.com stating that my current billing cycle had ended and that the Visa on file could not be charged. I sent a reply stating that this bill was incorrect along with the the Visa number and transaction information (sale/post date and transaction number). Since I recently closed that [Visa] account I added a MC (MasterCard) number to my billing information (via www.hostsave.com/cp)

- June 8, 2001
I received an email from billing@hostsave.com stating that my MC was charged $20.85. I replied by stating (again) that my account was "up to date" and that a credit of $20.85 needed to be issued.

- June 11, 2001
[HS accounting person] sent me an email stating that indeed my account is paid until November 2001 and she was issuing a credit of $41.70 (I sent an email saying the credit should have been for $20.85). 25 minutes after [HS accounting person's] emailed I received an email from support@hostsave.com saying that they had received my request to cancel my account. No such request was ever made. Domain goes down overnight. Email bouncing.

- June 12, 2001
I send an email to billing and support stating that my web site has been removed, email is bouncing and I can't log in the control panel. Five hours later I call Affinity (HS's parent company) and begged to speak with someone to correct their error. I'm told that they don't speak with HS customers (email support only ). After repeated calls their accounting supervisor (a very nice women). She spoke with me and agreed to assist. I did receive a call from someone at HS saying that she'd "looking into" the problem. My domain is still down.

- June 13, 2001
Email received from billing on someone else's account explaining HS's reinstatement policy. My domain is still down.

- June 14, 2001
Domain back up but had to upload all files. Sent email to billing explaining that their "Control Panel" still showed incorrect billing information (another ~$20 due on 07/01) and a credit still needed to be issued concerning the billing error.

- June 20, 2001
Email (finally) received from billing. They said I had to reenter my CC# to my billing information before a credit would be issued. No mention about not billing me again on 07/01. Replied that I removed my CC# to avoid another billing error. CC info sent in email.

- June 21, 2001 (today)
No credit has been issued for the billing error. According to their "control panel" I'm still going to get billed ~$20 on 07/01. No apology ever offerred for taking my site down.

Also, most of the emails concerning the site being down were also sent to their support department. Too bad they never responded to one of them.

Please note my site had only a few pages as it is used mostly for email (maybe 5 a day). I had been a satisfied and paying customer of Hostsave for over a year until this mess. I've advised my clients (17 of them, all using HS) of these problems and advised them that it's time to leave HS soon. 17 out of the 47k sites Affinity hosts is nothing, but hopefully others will learn from this saga ...

BTW, Aletia Hosting took less than 5 hours to me setup in their system (I did sign up at 10pm). If all goes well (and I have no reason to expect anything else) I'll move my clients over to them.

Is it me or am I justified in being pissed off?

They are charging you alot of money and you don't get very much for your money. Your better off somewhere else. $6.95 a month for 30mb and 4gigs. Your-site has a better offer on that they have 50megs and 6 gigs for 5 dollars a month. There tech support is very good. I had to cancel my account because I couldn't afford it with all my other domains. A good alternative is hosturbo 100megs and 1 gig of traffic for $19.95 a year. I have been very happy with them so far.

I had a similar problem once. Had accidently clicked on Netmechanic and expected another page with more information - instead I got greeted with a statement that my account had been charged $xx Dollars. It took me 6 weeks to get the credit for this and even then nothing was right.

I moved my domain somewhere else immediately.

Good luck!

I have not used HostSave in over a year and I still get bills from them. I thank God that I didn't give them a Credit Card. They were awful when I was with them too.

That's rather odd. Generally speaking, I've heard only positive things about HostSave.....hmmm

Hopefully these are isolated incidents.

I moved two of my sites across from hostsave to aletia hosting..... hostsave are TOTALLY useless, their support took 5 days to reply to a urgent e-mail (basically my site was down....again) and then they said "We have checked it out, and everything is fine"

Well of *course* everything is fine now, the problem was 5 bloody days ago!!!

Ouch, yet again......

Well, at least there are plenty of great hosts to choose from on this board. (And no I'm not only talking about mine :) )

I almost went with hostsave but there site didn't look professional at all. I'm glad that I didn't go with them after reading these comments. There are tons of awsome hosts on this board. This board is where I found most of my hosts!

Well, I see everyone else is going through the Hostsave blues too.

Monthly charges instead of quarterly, then yearly charges on top of that. They mysteriously billed be $160 for who knows what and sent my account into overdraft (I only had that account for Hostsave quartly charges, for three sites).

50 emails, to Hostsave AND Affinity, no replies.

I finally had to have my credit card company refund the charges, AND cancel the card.

They also would cancel my account every time I complained about an overcharge, then send an "Oops" letter.

I still have the overdraft charges that I had to pay, and still fighting to get those taken off my cc account.

What a frigg'n nightmare this has been.

I thought this were only isolated incidents too, until it happened to me. I got charged twice this year for my domain name. If anyone haven't had trouble with Hostsave yeat, I recommend you to get out of there ASAP!

What do you folks think about Aletia hosting?

Just an observation: This thread is over 7 months old.

Seems every now and then someone from, or a friend of Aletia hosting pulls up a post from the "past" as in a year or so old, that has some good marks for them in it....

This is like the 5th I have seen in the last month or so.

hostsave are bloody awful...

their response times to problems can take anything upto 2 weeks...

i know of someone who recently moved from them and she continued to be charged for the service...

i haven't checked the card i used, so i hope this hasn't happened to me...

i was with them for 2 years. for the most part, my only complaint was the horrific customer service and the practically useless control panel. i didn't experience too much down time...

then, they went through this recent upgrade and everything went downhill faster than a speeding bullet.

personally i wouldn't recommend them at all...
