View Full Version : sick european mentality... or....?
tortellini 06-21-2001, 03:21 AM Hello ;)
it was so strange yesterday. I've contacted by email a company in the US asking some things about one of their services (scripts, DB, etc.). I've sent the mail at about 10.30pm.
I do not have a signature in my emails, and I did not enclose my phone number.
After 10 minutes (10.40pm european time) this company called me  and I was really wondering that they looked at my email address, made a whois on my domain, got my number... and called me.
Now I'm really wondering if.... this is only strange for me... (european with a "heavy" privacy law and perhaps I have a sick opinion about privacy statements)... or if things like this are common in US. ;)
Anyway.... I'm not going to buy from them :stickout
XTStrike 06-21-2001, 03:36 AM hmm, it is a little strange that they called you from the USA and didnt reply to your e-mail instead, im in the UK and feel safe from sales calls simply because of the huge call charges on international calls.
Maybe it was simply because they felt you were interested in their service, "I" personally would have waived either way, depending on how i felt like at the time, one say would have been:
How dare you cal me at my home when you should have replied to my email
the other would have been:
wow, thats impressive, you actually bothered to look up my number, and you werent bothered about the international call charges in order to contact a client after working hours.
tortellini 06-21-2001, 03:44 AM the sales manager who called me told me... I did just send you an email, but we want to show our customers that we are here
The funniest thing is that this company is REALLY big (very well known, sell a lot, etc) ... and they gave me the impression they do REALLY need my money ;)
The funniest thing was when she (it was a she ;) ) told me... "If you want to talk with me... just send me an email and I will call you back! We are really doing the best NOT to have our customers paying for the expensive intercontinental phone calls ;)"
When I hear such things... well I nearly get angry.... coz... I'm sure that shall I really need support from them, they will never call me.... but sales does. ;)
Get-Hosted.com 06-21-2001, 04:14 AM Mind telling us what company it was?
XTStrike 06-21-2001, 04:14 AM I can see where you are comming from there, the more personal the service the smaller the company must be right?
I thought all sales people gave the impression they needed your money? ;) afterall that all they exist for.
*no flames from salespeople please*
*AND notice the term "salespeople"* :D
imho, id prefer a person that calls me like that, as it maybe shows a sign of commitment. but could also show a sign of company instability. its a very delicate balance.
tortellini 06-21-2001, 04:21 AM *lol* sorry for the flames... did not want to offend all the sales managers around ;)
In fact... the reason for this thread is exactly this... I do not know if this is really a thing of mentality (whois on domains to get phone number of potential customer)... or something else...
It was the first time something like this happened... and honestly speaking... I hope it is not going to happen too often... BUT... support experts are *always* welcome to call me, should there be a problem ;)

But that will never happen: support people usually hide!
;)
JKLIVIN 06-21-2001, 09:45 PM what's your #, I have about 25 behind me I will have them call you to see if you need anything.
XTStrike 06-22-2001, 03:33 AM hmm... thats a sly advertisement if ever ive seen one, hehehe ;)
tortellini 06-22-2001, 03:41 AM this would mean (if true)... 25 phonecalls from 10pm to 12pm? no way ;)
good morning xtstrike ;) hemmm... your thinking about downloading? :D
XTStrike 06-22-2001, 04:41 AM its a pointless reply but since its your thread anyways,
good morning to you tortellini
Craig 06-22-2001, 12:38 PM Same sort of thing happend to me on 2 seperate occasions, one was a uk company, very small, 1 man operation, got my number from the whois on my domain.
the 2nd one was alabanza, they called me withing about an hour of sending them an email. Was on the phone for about an hour to the sales rep too, very nice bloke.
Well, I know the sales people at work call anyone that sends in a phone number. The importance or amount of interest shown doesn't seem to matter as it's seen as a lead either way. Considering sales are commision based and there are some pretty agressive sales people, I wouldn't put it past anyone to do a whois search. If it's a business, you can usually obtain a number through any online listing.
