View Full Version : AMD in a 1U?

Has anyone had any experience using AMD Thunderbird processors (Socket A) in a 1U case? I'm looking to migrate a few midtowers over, and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on cooling fans, motherboards, etc.

Any input/experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Athlons have a tendency to over heat make sure you have lots of fans exp. in a 1u

I have to agree with cbaker17 here, although I think he understates the problem. Athlons often exceed their rated temperature even in well ventilated tower cases... if you put one into a poorly ventilated case -- and I think any 1U case qualifies as poorly ventilated no matter how many fans it has -- even if you use the largest fan/heatsink which will fit within the height limit you're likely to have trouble.

I'm sure it *can* be done... but considering the problems you're likely to have, I'd really have to suggest getting at least a 2U case, or using Pentium IIIs instead.

I have some Athlon's running in 1U cases w/ no problems. The chips are running at around 100F, while most of the PIIIs in 1Us are running a little higher.

The cases are well cooled (5 case fans + cpu fan + ps fan).

Since I go to this forum already for some time and it is very interesting for me,
I would like to introduce this products also here.
These are 1U Servers with AMD-Duronīs for the German market. No problems with overheating in the 1U Case.
The side is only in german

VA Linux Systems is working on a really cool new 1U with Dual Athlons _and_ internal RAID.
Killer stuff!

It's almost done (in beta now). It looks really cool.

Should be in production in a few weeks at most.

RackSaver (http://www.racksaver.com) makes some great servers. I have purchased three from them, all with no problem. As to overheating, the athlons are cooled well and it isn't an issue.

just my $0.02, don't worry, I don't work form them or anything.

Hi!

Definately make sure you use copper heatsinks if you're putting AMD chips in a 1U chasis....

Dont skimp on the chasis either! Pay the extra and you wont be disappointed!

We pay $ 300 - 400 / chasis and they last a very long time and stay exceptionally cool! ;)

Cheers,

Does anyone have a specific list of components used successfully and where to purchase them from? We've tried a few different things, but heat has definately been a problem in each scenario.

Thanks, and let me know.

I already said racksaver is where I get mine...

just look at the specs....

would you like me to copy and paste it?

No, I saw what they use after your post... I was looking for other people's experiences in addition to what you posted.

Well I am building two of my own in the next few weeks. I'll let you know how they go. As for the racks, I have two 1U Boomracks (boomrack.com)
