Which one of these? HostRocket.com, LinuxWebhost.com, or Below10Host? I need a pretty reliable hosting for my open-source Linux projects. I'm still confused which one to choose. I don't need something that offers too much features, but slow, unreliable. I don't need something like $1 web hosting or something that is very cheap but has a lot of catches. All I need is a good, reasonable, and reliable hosting with PHP and MySQL support with some 30 megs space, with a good cost, since I'm not making money out of this.

Which one of those 3 is the best? I tried phoning Terabyte.com this morning and it says I have to have a credit card. I don't want to use a credit card anymore since I've had bad
experience before with it.

I would avoid LinuxWebhost.com they are owned by the same man that owns sitehost4u.com who I personally have had problems with and seen that others have to.

Ive heard good things about
HostRocket.com also there is hostmatters.com

Good luck to you! :)

Yes, hostmatters.com seems pretty good, I heard the tech support is very nice & kind person. But it's just a bit expensive though ($14.95) which do not really meet for my budget (I'm a college student, btw).

What about below10host.com?

I have one site one tera-byte getting ready to move, mostly due to billing issues. To explain, I signed up expecting one price but was charged another one due to exchange rates. Knew there was a catch to it, oh well, keep on shopping.

Actually James Rogers no longer owns sitehost4u.com he sold it to AMS Computer Services which they also own below10host.com
I would suggest sitehost4u.com or below10host both owened by AMS and have great support

Milk,

That's the risk we all take when we pay for hosting in different countries. Foreign exchange rates do fluctuate and can severely affect the price you're willing to pay. Quite frankly however, since I'm in Australia, I'm pretty much forced to rely on US/Canadian hosting purely for monetary reasons (over here a typical $20US/month plan involves 1GB bandwidth, 10 mb space, and a few other bits and pieces - that's it).

GoodPerson,

I personally use Below10Host as my host and have found them to be extremely reliable. They're based on the Alabanza network, which results in excellent uptime and speed, while their tech support is very, very good.

Side note : I will be leaving Below10Host on very good terms, and will be moving to Tera-byte by the end of the month purely for dual PHP/ASP development.

Thus, Below10Host is very highly recommended.

Wow How did you know he is who I had the problem with *G* Yes he is the person that I took issue with. I can only speak to my experience with him when he owned the company.

GoodPerson,

I just realised something. You want to host open source Linux projects right? You can get hosting for free! :)

Check out http://www.sourceforge.net - they're a free, dedicated open-source host backed by VAlinux.com. That way you don't have to pay :)

I recomend Hostrocket. They got everything you need.

They look good but I just don't like that setup fee, I've got 4 sites to get up and running and could use that $40 elsewhere.

BC, you may want to check with Chilisoft before making that move. Unless things have changed, Chilisoft's ASP doesn't support everything, but most common things. Apparently there are add-on packages (guess they need more than $1000 per server license).

Again, I haven't been in over a month, so they may have changed it.

Mike,

That's fine. I've already spoken with Steve and will take advantage of their 30-day guarantee if things fail to work.

I guess I'll find out by the middle of next month whether it'll work out or not - if not, then off to a dedicated NT host I go *sigh*

BC, let me know how it works out for you. We have been considering getting Chilisoft, but if it doesn't work as they advertise, I don't want to spend the money.

Hello,

Milkman, If our setup fees are the only problem we are fairly flezible with them. Send me an email at brendan@hostrocket.com if you are still looking for a host.

Mike,

My advice is to hold off buying ChiliASP for now. Not only does it not have full implementation of ASP, but many of the hosts I've talked to who have it (or have attempted to install it) say they have encountered at least 2 or 3 problems with it. Some have miserably failed....

Adding to my concerns, some of the dedicated ASP forums I hang out at have stated that they have had particular trouble getting their ASP code to work on ChiliASP (especially in regards to ADO connections and permissions) . Unfortunately this also means I might have to ditch Tera-byte and go for a dedicated NT host (of which I have one in mind and has both ASP/PHP installed - will keep you informed as to how that goes).

Just as a matter of interest, there is an Open Source project going which is attempting to translate ASP for a *nix system (in essence, a free alternative to ChiliASP) - it's called OpenASP. However, I believe the implementation is still very buggy, so I wouldn't recommend it - yet. If you like, I can chase it up and send you the info.
