Im looking at building a PC with the following specs and costs for the parts (All prices CDN $)

-AMD TBird 1.3 Ghz - 356.00 (Retail)
-256MB DDR Ram - 110.00 (OEM)
-Asus A7M-266 Mobo - 269.00 (Retail)
-IBM 30.0 7200RPM - 209.00 (OEM)
-Pioneer Slot-Load 16x DVD-ROM -119.00 (OEM)
-Soundblaster Live Value - 73.00 (OEM)
-Altec Lansing 4spk & Subwoofer - 100.00
-ASUS 7700 GeForce 2 GTS 64MB - 369.95 (Retail)
-19" Samsung 950P .27DPI - 399.00
-Floppy - 19.00
-Standard AMD Certified Case - 99.00
-MS Internet Keyboard - 35.00
-MS Intellimouse Optical - 49.00

How are the prices for the parts? Note: $1.00 CDN = about $0.66 USD.

What type of cooling and how much extra cooling will I need for this system. The processor comes with a heatsink or a fan or something, and NOISE is an issue. There are multiple computers in this room, and several people work in here at one time.

Thanks,
Shawn

hey ;)

the retail version just comes with a fan and a heatsink... this is basically the minimally required cooling the processor needs... for a prolonged CPU life, you should at least have a heatsink and a fan to accompany your CPU

now for cooling, im going to get a 1.2 AMD TB 266mhz FSB in a few days once the vid card i want to get comes back in stock... I'm buying the OEM version which is $20 cheaper then the retail. I'm also buying a Thermaltake Volcano II Heatsink that comes with dual Ball bearing fans. I've read some reviews of this cooling solution and seems to be able to cool down socket As alot ;)

you have to consider couple things when you are looking for cpu cooling... how long is it going to be on during the day, room temperature, any overclocking?

if the CPU will be working 24/7 + no AC in room + overclocking, you should think about taking the retail fan/heatsink off and enhancing the cooling for your CPU. for cooling stuff goto http://www.2cooltek.com ;)

g'luck

It will be on about 14 hours a day in a mid-temp room with no overclocking...

I was just informed by a retailed that if you do not use the fan with the processor then AMD will not warrenty the processor should their be a problem.

Shawn

IF you have extra money and need a good cooling solution for your CPU, buy the Silverado... it's around $80 USD and is the best around. Cooling is almost top of the line, and it is Very quiet. I recommend you get crucial.com DDR ram, don't go with some crap OEM. Crucial has very good prices too. For the CPU... at 1.3GHz... the retail will barely cool the CPU, and might be kinda loud... that is a really hot CPU. Good motherboard if you plan on no overclocking. DVD is good. Very good HDD. Soundblaster Live Value should be fine. Your paying way to much for that video card, for $50 USD more... you could have a Geforce 3, I'd recommend you just get a LeadTek Geforce 2 Pro, for around $200 USD.... better then your original card anyway. Good monitor. Make SURE the case has a decent fan in the front sucking air in, and hopefully a fan in the back pulling air out...
Just missed a deal on that mouse for $16USD. Other they that you will be fine... I'd recommend going to a local computer store and hearing how loud the 1.3Ghz retail CPU is before you spend a lot of extra money for almost nothing. I know you can get a 1.2GHz for $99 USD right now, OE ofcourse.

I recommend the Thermaltake processor fan as previously suggested. Check them out at www.thermaltake.com. Also, any fan that is AMD certified will keep your warranty intact. AMD won't void the warranty if you don't use the fan that the supplier gives you. As long as you use one that is AMD certified, you are fine. Thermaltake fans are AMD certified.

I just have to let you know... Thermaltake is not a good HSF. It is a decent HSF that you can get by with... nothing more... especially at those temps. They are loud and crappy... I don't even recommend a Super orb for over 1.1ghz. I highly recommend you stay away from anything with the name orb on it... most have multiple fans, which don't cool very effectively, and create a whining sound.

Can it possible that you get the defective one? I have bought/used more than 8 thermaltake fans, for my own PC and my servers ... They are all working very well... Especially for 1U server, thermatalke makes one of the best (out of very few of them) low profile fans out there... If you know of any other low profile fans (that will fit in 1U case and better than thermaltake), please let me know :)

cheers,
