View Full Version : Bandwidth Issues
UNIXIELHOST 08-18-2000, 08:57 PM I tested my bandwidth at this site:
http://webservices.cnet.com/bandwidth/ (http://webservices.cnet.com/bandwidth/default.asp?Start=1)
You can see how fast your connection is. I usually average see 500Kpbs ....
Should I get DSL for 1.5mbps Guarantee speed?

Guaranteed? Hmmm. The DSL line into my home is supposed to be 608kbps, but I usually only get around 400kbps at best. I live less than one thousand feet from the phone offices too. They said I should get max speed, but I never have.
I've never heard of Guaranteed DSL speeds. Who's the provider? Do they offer a money back thing if it isn't 1.5mbps?

UNIXIELHOST 08-18-2000, 10:40 PM GTE told me I would get guarantee 1.5Mbps but I dobut becuase I would never see a DSL for $249 a month, would you?
I am looking at BlueStar.net but thier prices is too much!
GTE can't always be trusted. They told me I could get DSL, so I signed up. Then on the date of install, they realized I couldn't get it.
UNIXIELHOST 08-18-2000, 11:49 PM JTY,
SO your DSL was screwed?
Yep, and it pissed me and the isp off, as they had already prepared a block of 8 ips and firewalling for me.
Duster 08-19-2000, 12:26 AM Some companies do guarantee the speed of their DSL lines, some don't. For instance, with Bell South, the maximum downstream is 1.5 mbps and they do tell you that your speed will probably be less. Mine is 1.472 mbps, which is pretty darn fast. I have two friends in the same end of the county who have DSL with BellSouth, and their speeds are lower.
In fact, my friend Bob only connects at just a bit over 1 mbps ( I forget the exact amount now). Interestingly, he's in telecommunications and is an agent for a company that offers guaranteed speed DSL (2 or 4 mbps). It's geared for businesses and relatively expensive for home use.
If you want to learn more about it, you can go to his web site at http://interworldtel.com and click on Network Services.
I'm happy with my $40 a month DSL from Bell South, especially since it's been staying up lately (it was down more than up during the first month).
UNIXIELHOST 08-19-2000, 12:42 AM JTY,
DSL did came to my house but said my phone jack was no good and had to prewire all new and it will cost me more and I said forget it and go home then end up calling Comcast@Home and decide to signup and they came and got me online within minutes. And since Feburary 2000 to today, I even't paid a penny due to thier network problems sometimes, they keep crediting my account :-P
By the way, why you need 8 IP's? :)
Boy, I saved about $400 maybe? heheh ... Septemeber will start paying ...
Duster, BellSouth has good DSL but the setup fees is too high.. heard was $199 rather than @Home for $49 (During special). DSL Setup fee can be waived on some special promotions as well.
I tried the C|Net Bandwidth again, still same 480kpbs ... Duster prolly get more than what I current have.
Félix C.Courtemanche 08-19-2000, 01:23 AM A simple note here for people:
mbps and mb/s isnt the same thing
for example:
1,500mbps means 1,500 mega bits per seconds
wich means in normal language (1500 mega bytes/seconds )/ 8 to get it in bytes
We usually all work in bytes... so if you are getting 400kb/sec... do the math and you will see this actually 3,200mbps wich means its faster than a t1 (in download only)
bandwidth class anyone? :)

SarasotaWeb,
I need 8 ips, because I have to many computers.
UNIXIELHOST 08-19-2000, 02:04 AM JTY,
For your information, I can run 8 computers on 1 IP address by using 10Mpbs Hub and it works for me when I use 3 PC's here.
Usually it can slow down the speed but it saves you money...
[This message has been edited by SarasotaWeb (edited 08-19-2000).]
SarasotaWeb,
The ISP didn't charge extra for more ips, as they are business oriented.
UNIXIELHOST 08-19-2000, 03:14 AM JTY,
Then you lucky !
I must pay extra but I dont use extra IP anyway ...
I have a Sprint Broadband DSL and im very unhappy with it. Unfortunitly its the only thing available to me for a few months to come. They claim im on a 5mb/256k pkg. The best ive ever got is 38ksec down and best up is 8k sec. which is around
304k down/ 64k up. This is way off from thier cliam of 5mb and they said unfortunitly the speed meets their minimum rates they have to provide in the small print. Oh well , hold out for that dedicated line or a more reliable provider i guess :)
Ungrateful People!!! (only joking :))
We still have to work with modems, 56K if we're lucky, these rarely connected at more than 45K though. Most of us 65% can't get ADSL due to coverage and slow rollout, and when it is available it's expensive at and bandwidth is shared between 50 or 20 users, also subject to 12 month contract, setup and
loads of other things in the contract. Leased Lines/Dedicated Connections are very expensive as well. I believe if you hunt for a quote you can get a T1 for $600 in USA, the best we can get it for is about $2500 per month (E1, slightly more than T1).
Moan....
Admin,
If it makes you feel any better, a 56k DDS/Frame Relay cost $200 a month with a 1 year contract. And install is $450 not counting router and access unit.
UNIXIELHOST 08-19-2000, 05:16 PM Admin,
I can get T1 for about $295/395 a month through a company called innerX
But that must be shared T1 maybe? But full T1 could be $1,200 or higher.
Duster 08-20-2000, 03:23 AM Duster, BellSouth has good DSL but the setup fees is too high.. heard was $199 rather than @Home for $49 (During special). DSL Setup fee can be waived on some special promotions as well.
My special is better than yours is, naa naa naa naaa na. ;-D
I go the modem for free, no setup/activation or installation fees. It was a self install special. I also got a $50 credit towards a gift certificate at Barnes & Noble that I used to buy a couple of books about Linux.
They have another special going on, though I don't think it's quite as generous as the one I got. I have a good nose for sniffing out bargains. ;-)
UNIXIELHOST 08-20-2000, 03:35 AM Duster,
What a lucky bitch deal you got :P
GTE offers FREE Installtion, Modem and First month free if I signup now, $380 savings.... Hmm Should I try that? :)
Brian Farkas 08-20-2000, 04:32 AM Another speed test is at: http://computingcentral.msn.com/topics/bandwidth/speedtest.asp
Right now I'm on a cable modem getting 1854.5 kbps by the C|Net calculations and 1813.3 kbps by the MSN calculations.
It's usually slower during the day, around 900 kbps...

UNIXIELHOST 08-20-2000, 05:50 AM Ya, I tried that and got 760Kpbs .... Maybe MSN is better eh?
C|Net says mine was 570Kpbs

I can't really answer that for you, neither can anyone else. If you were planning on getting it anyway, it would seem like a good time to do so, assuming the speed/cost value is satisfactory, especially as compared to other options you might have available.
My local cable company, rated the best of all the cable companies in the county (which still isn't saying much) had cable modem service available well before DSL became available in my area.
I once had cable with them and dropped it due to their lousy attitude and service (that's the short story). I simply didn't want to trust them with anything as important as my Internet connection. Furthermore, it was a paltry 600 kbps (downstream), and they wanted $70 a month for it. Heck, DirecPC (satellite reception) is 400 kbps, and I believe for about half the cost.
Additionally, this was on top of cable tv service, which was mandatory in order to get cable modem. That adds another $10 (for basic tv service) to the bill, or about $80 a month for a maximum 600 kbps connection.
I had bought a satellite dish so I wouldn't have to deal with them and they wouldn't offer cable modem without cable tv.
When DSL finally became available to me (it's line specific), it was $10 less than cable modem alone, and $20 less for me since I have certain other services with Bell South. They lowered it another $10 just as I got it (I told you I have a way with bargains).
When have you known a cable company to lower rates?
So, I end up paying $40 for a near 1.5 mbps connection (1.472 in my case) vs. a total of $80 for a 600 kbps one, that is inferior in every way.
My point, check the details. Don't just say "oh boy, cable modem or DSL". Check the details (especially speed) and waht else is available. Only you can decide if it's worth it.
Taxibear 08-20-2000, 10:00 AM Just a question really:
Is the standard north american cable modem throttled to 1,5 Mbps?
I live in Sweden and just got my cable modem installed. It gives me 512/128 which is the typical offering here.
ADSL is coming soon too. I think the specs are 4Mbps/1Mbps.

Therre are no standards when it comes to speed. Cable modem technology allows for a top speed of 10 mbps, yet some cable systems are as low as 600 kbps and possibly lower (as in your case).
ADSL can go up to 6 mbps, possibly higher.
In either case, the speed offered by providers available to any of us is likely to fall considerably short of the maximum possible. How short depends on the provider.
UNIXIELHOST 08-20-2000, 09:12 PM Brian,
Are you with @Home or RoadRunner?
I average get 700 to 900kpbs

MikeA 08-21-2000, 09:19 AM Ok, as long as we are talking about nothing important :) What is the best proxy software out there? I use winroute, but it has a limit of 1200 connections (per PC) before it bombs.
I mean, I'll be playing counterstrike and do a search for sites, there will be 4000+ and when winroute hits 1200, it freezes.
Anyone else got a better proxy and if so, what's the price?
