Trevor 06-19-2001, 02:32 AM Very interested in starting my own host using a reseller program.
What are the absolute best places to set myself up at.
I am looking at *****.

Any input greatly appreciated.

Newbie 06-19-2001, 02:35 AM Do a search on the boards here for ***** I think you'll want to think about that.

Though ***** might be much better by now, you may find it useful to search this forum for "*****". And youwill get tons of complains about them, both past and recently ...
Besides, why do you think their plans look descent? You may list the features and price here that you think descent and I (and I am sure others) will try to think of other host/alternative that may be better/cheaper for you ....
cheers,
Trevor 06-19-2001, 02:44 AM thanks buddy. you rock
Ok so ***** Sucks.. didnt take much searching for me to realize that.
Heres the plan im looking at.
IT does seem amazing, and over 100k customers cant be wrong (but apparnetly they are).
This is the URL of the Plan i am looking at.
http://www.*****.com/?zone=resellers/dedicated_private_label_partner
Main Features.
200 Gigs BandWidth per Resold Domain
60 Gigs WebSpace
Seemingly excellent customer support.
That was enough to get me on the boat.
So thats no good.
Anybody suggestions on a better place?
Im looking for as much freedom as possible in running my own hosting company, but wont sacrifice quality which would upset customers.
Thanks
Trevor

As I said, they might be better now, but we have heard many people who tried them out, even after being suggested not to, and got burned shortly afterwards... Anyway .... I myself can't say that they are absolutely bad and the worst, because no host is perfect .... It's all your call ...
This is the URL of the Plan i am looking at.
http://www.*****.com/?zone=resellers/dedicated_private_label_partner
Main Features.
200 Gigs BandWidth per Resold Domain
60 Gigs WebSpace
[note: you might get it wrong ... it's not 200GB per resold domains ... you would get a server with a total of 200GB of transfer for all of your domains on that server]
OK ... all this for $100/mo and $7/resold domain ....
You may feel that this is cheap ... probably, but at $7/resold domain it may not be cheap after a while. Consider you will put 300 accounts on that server, that would be $2200/mo. You may get much for $2200/mo and even less ... at 200GB bandwith you can get your own dedicated server for less than $700-900/mo (similar server, and perharps even less). About bandwith ... many hosts here will back me up to say that in the average an account will consumes about 500MB of data trasnfer per month ... meaning, for 300 acccounts you would probably need around 150GB ... But let's assume in the average, an account will need 1GB of data transfer per month ... so you would need 300GB of bandwith meaning you would buy another 100GB of extra bandwith from them ... How much would they charge for this? ***** will charge around $5 (pre-pay) to $10 (non prepay) per GB ... so, fro 100GB extra, you would need to add at least $500/mo on top of that $2200/mo for a total of $2700/mo... You can find other host who would give you all this for half the price ***** charges or even cheaper .... You may rent a dedicated server (non-cobalt servers) with only several GB of transfer (this will cost you around $150-$200/mo) initially and buy more bandwith as you go ...
Besides, they require you to sign a 12 months contract ... something that should alert you ...
Seemingly excellent customer support.
About their support ... try to call their 800 numbers (for support, of course ... not sales :) ) and see how long it will take you to get answer from them ... try it at random times, even at 3:00 am ...
Im looking for as much freedom as possible in running my own hosting company, but wont sacrifice quality which would upset customers.
One alternative that I may suggest you is to get your own server from rackshack.net (it's cobalt server, and it might be inferior to most servers). At $99/mo, you would get 150GB of bandwith and you may host around 200 domains on that server ... All this for only $99/mo ... I have never heard a serious complain about rackshack.net, other that their technical support is not really knowledgable ... might not matter much since you can find other source of helps, including this forum. You may also try 4webspace.com (subsidiary of tera-byte.com) who has a very good reputation on this forum ...
Or you may try to start as a reseller ... Many good hosts here do offer reasonable reseller account (for as low as around $3-$4 per resold account) and good support such as www.wizardshosting.com, www.venturesonline.com, www.jaguarpc.com, etc ... All these offer a very nice contol panel too (better than *****'s), for your clients...
Anyway, you may consider ***** to be cheap initially ... but as you grow, they might not be cheap after all ... Something that you may need to consider ...
What do you think?
cheers,

Trevor 06-19-2001, 03:32 AM Awesome.
Thanks for the Info.
Ok so *****.. is expensive, after all.
Really what i am looking for is a professional company which can host my server and allow me start my own hosting company (Reseller, i suppose)
Basically like *****.
They were offering my own Dedicated Server, from which i have the opportunity to offer clients every feature they may need.
From MySQL, to Miva MErchant, everything.
This is exactly what i am looking for.
A place that allows me flexibility to offer any type of plan i want for whatever price i choose.
I will look into the ones you listed.
Any additional input would be appreciated, again.
:)
XTStrike 06-19-2001, 03:59 AM ARGH NO STAY AWAY :D
PLEASE GOD NO DONT DO IT:D
As a wild stab in the dark i'd say: STAY AWAY
WWW.BADWEBHOST.COM
Ok, thats enough, hope i can convince you its the devil, hey we have even wrote a story on this board and ***** plays a core role...
Martie 06-19-2001, 04:12 AM You might want to check out the reseller forum here
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=3
There are tons of companies offering reseller plans of all types..you might also find the http://www.recellar.com a helpful site.
Good luck
Dogma 06-19-2001, 09:10 AM This thread should be posted in the Reseller Forum.
so many reasons:
a) tech support does not exist for you or customers
b) the hotline for resellers is never answered or always busy
c) the accounting department is a joke. They are always behind, for example, they were billing me for ten accounts when I had over 75 accounts, they were 6 months behind, all of a suddent they shut down my accounts and they caught up on their accounts, we had to shell ouyt over $4,0000 in one shot, not very professional
d) I challenge you to call their tech support and see how long you are on hold
e) they take forever to make changes to domains, such as MX records
f) you wait weeks for a response to trouble tickets
this is ALL from personal experience....
Lah_Lah 06-19-2001, 09:44 AM Do Not resell Fasthosts.co.uk, they are not unlimited.
they are kidding
Chicken 06-19-2001, 10:27 AM Really, if you are going to resell for a company, you have to be comfortable with them. You have to feel confident that they will be able to support you in a timely fashion. If your client has a question or a problem, they will be waiting for a response back from you, and if you have to email someone else to get the answer, you want that reply to be as quick and correct as possible.
***** has many clients. Although it isn't who'd I'd personally resell for, I think a better idea would be to ask current and former ***** resellers what their experiences are/were. Get the good/bad/ugly before you sign up for 12 months.
