Unless he has updated it the Bassi pkg is very out of date. Newer versions of Mailscanner are capable of detecting many common viruses, dangerous code and a lot more, so you should install it from source.

What other virus Defs can you use with mailscanner?

If you follow the directions inserting the latest versions of the software you can use f-prot with mailscanner. I have it setup to download virus definition with a cron job.

I have a client that receives documents that look like bell.abc.wpd. Mailscanner thinks it is a virus. Any ideas/

If you are using the current version of Mailscanner have a good look through the configuration files. You should be able to setup specific rules

Anyone have install steps for Kaspersky?

RAQ4 - Having installed bothMailScanner and SpamAssassin, I want to improve the spam detection rate and I see that there is an SA-LEARN feature which you may re-send spam and non spam to a specified mail account. Can I set a GUI mail account for this ?

are designed for Free-BSD servers and not RAQ. I am not sure whether I must install amavisd and all the others mentioned in this document, to get the learning going.

I would advise that you have a look through the mailing list archives for the Mailscanner. There are a lot of very savvy people using it who discuss many aspects of spam blocking both through the software and its many addons

/etc/rc.d/init.d/MailScanner stop

does not work?

Also, how do I know if my virus defs are being updated?

Which anti-virus are you using?

I don't know which version of MailScanner Bassi's pkg is based on, but I have a feeling it's quite an old one.

I would strongly recommend visiting the project site and looking at the RAQ instructions.

/etc/rc.d/init.d/mailscanner restart

or
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mailscanner stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mailscanner start

or you may run
find MailScanner
cd /etc/rc.d/inti.d

then you know for sure where located to run command.

I think that is an older version. When I was using this one, to stop it you have to run a file in the /usr/local/MailScanner directory, (not sure about the filename I think it was something like check_something.sh) and it will give you the pid #.
Then just type kill (and the pid#) this will stop it. And to restart it just use:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/MailScanner start

With newer versions you simply type:
service MailScanner stop/start/restart

We suggest using the latest Mailscanner. Julian and team worked pretty hard to iron out some issues. We have found the newer version works much better on Raqs. You still need to make some modifications as suggested in the article above, but overall we find the new version works well.

We did find some issues with virus scanners trying to grab a tty. Make sure you do a test to make sure the virus scanning portion is working. By default Mailscanner will block a number of files based on filename, so you may need to turn off those matches to make sure your virus program is catching viruses.

We use mailscanner with RAV AV, but Microsoft bought RAV AV, so I am not sure of the future of the product.

F-prot and sophos are other alternatives. I have not sufficient tested clam-AV to know how well it works. RAV AV is around $30 for a license. Not sure pricing on other options. If Panda AV is supported, the have a command line version for linux around the $30 mark.

Does anybody have an experience of installing MailScanner on a RAQ 550 ?
