View Full Version : 56k
alapo 04-15-2003, 04:48 PM So I'm on vacation... and all the hotel has is a 56k (supposed to be anyways, I am getting no more than 1-2k when it is just me connected) connection... I am coming from 3mbit/1mbit cable back home. I just had to say that browsing the web at a blistering 800 bytes per second is amazing!
:uzi: 56k
 :puke: 56k
MGCJerry 04-15-2003, 05:26 PM WOW... Thats amazing. When I had 56k, I was only able to browse at 400-600. :bawling: I dont have the net at my place since I moved.
But now I'm at my cousin's place and they have cable, so it is ok.
ilyash 04-15-2003, 06:35 PM i have 56k.... <- my confession lol
i hate that ****
i try to play games online... 999 ping lol
gettin dsl soon lol
Mester 04-15-2003, 07:38 PM You get used to it :(
I download at 4.5KB/sec and ping at 350.
Then my friends complain when they download at 100KB/sec or ping over 150 on their dsl :D

I'd actually be happy if I were able to get a sub-100 ping. DSL is horrible for gaming if your in Canada.
It's not that the network is bad or anything, it's just that the monopoly isp here puts almost everyone on interleave and it increases latency tremendously.

JackMitchell 04-16-2003, 12:47 AM The only time i complain is when my pings time out  I'm never connected any higher than 32k :(
VH-Robert 04-16-2003, 01:14 AM I haven't been on a dialup in 2 years, but what kind of hotel provides 56K connections? Most hotels are equiped with a DSL/T-1 connection to provide to its customers.
When i was up in canada they only provided 56k in the rooms, broadband down in the lobby, but only one computer..
I'm on 56k until I get off my ass and get a job.
Ohh well I guess.

At least your honest about needing to get off your ass. GET A JOB! :) And get out of 56k hell!
NumLock 04-17-2003, 12:38 AM me on a 56k ka and I guess its ok. Very cheap if you ask me, a whole lot cheaper than cable and DSL, plus I don't need the unlimited connection, I'm mostly out of the house........ maybe when I get a job...... :D
alapo 04-17-2003, 03:02 PM Finally... it seems the phone line noise is gone... I'm connected at a full 56k, and downloading at ~6KBps! Woohoo blazin!
ChickenSteak 04-17-2003, 03:36 PM I remember the ol'e 56k days...
Now it's the good old cable & dsl.
I've DSL here at my house, and my next door neighbor has cable.
We multi-homed the connections yesterday, I'm downloading at (~300-500kb/s). It's pretty nice....
THW-Dave 04-17-2003, 04:57 PM uhg. i cant play with anything more than a 80 ping.. and cant stand it when someone downloads slower than 200k/sec
so im spoiled.. life is too short to waste it watching percent's go by slow.. :)
gobbles 05-13-2003, 11:12 AM Im on 56k ... and d/l ing 3Mb files is getting very frustrating .. taking up to 25mins FOR 3MB
Downloading the Slackware ISO at 2.7Kb is very very distressing.
Gordo 05-13-2003, 12:08 PM It's nice to have some of you high speed folks come down and slum with those of us on 56K.LOL
I'm sure it's a big come down. But that's what a large portion of internet users deal with everyday. Why do you think some of us complain about how some websites are built?
rooshine 05-13-2003, 12:35 PM I have a nice dsl connection normally, but, if you can believe this, I am right now in an office using a shared 56k line. Yes, I said shared.
I would be so much happier if I just didn't know broadband existed. If only I thought it was normal for nice flash sites to take minutes, or coming back from lunch to find that 10M file is almost finished. But alas, I know what it is like to surf at full speed, so I in a slow hell.
