View Full Version : Any recommendations/opinions?
spoon805 08-17-2000, 02:36 PM Has anyone delt with http://www.netmart.com/ before? Any problems? How's tech support?
They have an incredible deal, I have no idea how they are doing it.
And does anyone know how they can register domain names for only $25? Is it a scam?
Regards,
Simon
Duster 08-17-2000, 03:05 PM I'm not familiar with that company, though a quick look at their site does not reveal any of the common lies, like unlimited bandwidth. That is an incredible deal, literally not credible.
Netmart's deals are good, just not unbelievably so.
Registering domain names for $25 is easy, not necessarily a scam. There are registrars charging about half that much, so while $25 is better than the $35 NSI charges, it's no great bargain. I pay only $13.50 at 000domains.com and have better service and control than at NSI. There are other registrars that are a big improvement over NSI as well.
Good luck in your search for a good host.
Vladislav 08-17-2000, 03:19 PM Duster: they offer unlimited bandwidth and space for $10 a month? :)

I'm afraid they do, in fact - their 9.95 "no limits" plan does indeed say no limits on drive space and bandwidth. The other plans they have listed have regular specs. Personally, I would never pay 39.95 as a setup fee, but others' MMV. I'm also a little curious as to why their order form says "Where did you hear about Mr. Webhosting?" and why their TOS won't pop up (at least when I tried it).
And Duster is right - there are cheaper registrars out there. Heck, we do registrations for $20, and there's 000domains, joker.com, weblaunching.net, etc., that all do it even more cheaply than that.

MikeA 08-17-2000, 04:09 PM NSI just plain sucks. It used to be VERY easy to move domains, then they had to go and change things. Now it works half the time and the other half I'm continuely hitting my back button.
Go with someone else, Annette listed some, we also do $20.00 domain registrations and I think that tucows.com does them for $15.00.

spoon805 08-17-2000, 04:41 PM wow, I didn't know NSI was so bad... i already registered 2 domains with them... is there anything i can do?
btw, i found some other great hosters
http://www.webexpose.net/services/hosting.asp http://www.usware.net/hosting.asp
any expereience with these guys? They look more credible and seem to offer a little more. Opinions? Critisms?
*note - I didn't notice it on the site, but I called Sales, and the free stuff only lasts for year on NetMart. Still a great deal nevertheless
Duster 08-17-2000, 09:21 PM I did say it was a quick look. I saw different plans that were 3 gb, 7 gb and up. If they offer "unlimited bandwidth", then I retract part of what I said.
I agree about the setup charge too. It's bad enough to pay any for shared server hosting, but $40 is pretty high for a couple of minutes' work.
In the immortal words of Miss Emily Latella "never mind".
Spoon, you can transfer and renew your NSI registrations with any other registrar. You're not stuck with them for life. Just choose a registrar like you would a hosting company. Some of them are pretty bad too and have substandard service. Avoid alldns.com There're not quite up to snuff.
On a totally unrelated matter (sorry), Duster, do you watch CNBC? I'm just curious because I day trade and watch CNBC about 15 hours a day, and there was just a little argument on there about who it was that said "nevermind", and it was Emily Latella!
Just wondering if it's a coincidence that you mentioned her and her quote a day after CNBC brought it up?
And Spoon, do you want Unix/Linux or NT? Because those last two you mentioned i would assume are NT becuase the pages end in .asp.
Duster 08-18-2000, 02:40 AM Yes, it was a coincidence. I often think of the late Gilda Radner. She had quite a talent for making us laugh.
Coreace 08-18-2000, 09:57 AM Who said NetworkSolutions is bad?
Yes, you might find the price dumped elsewhere and being registered through 44 other registrars, but for me NO. Easy to transfer and their new database is excellent also covering foreign countries can register in one snap! I have never had any problems either through phone or email a few glitches some years back otherwise fine.
Be aware of that some of the small registrars will go down sooner or later, who's going to help you transfer the domain(s) heh? Price isn't everything look at the overall and think 10 years ahead.
Coreace,
Although I fully agree that price isn't everything and there's always that chance of smaller registrars going under, we need to recall specific problems relating directly to NSI as quoted in this forum and others around the Net regarding their lack of technical support (when required), their monopolistic intentions and above all, their intentions and attitude towards other registrars (especially based from CORENic, Melbourne IT and others). It must be said the negatives there outweigh the benefits of registering domains at the original source.
For me I prefer register.com ya log in change your DNS Bang its done no weeding through forms I moved my domains yesterday one was resolving in a few hours the other a few hours after that with InterNIC Id still be waiting on forms. I had a question once gave register.com a call at 4PM on a Sunday and got a live person that answered my question and then sent a personal follow up to make sure I was set. *G*
Bill K. 08-19-2000, 04:34 AM Coreace,
If you want to spend big bucks for something that is much cheaper to buy *everywhere* else, and support a business that engages in illegal (yes, illegal) business practices (such as not releasing unrenewed domain names back to the public), then keep getting your domain names from Network Solutions...
