The one Porky uses looks quite nice...

If you only want to track the number of users per day/month/week, etc.
You're better off just making a small PHP script, but it's up to you.

Note that both Webalizer and AWStats, both of which are pretty nice statistics trackers, don't agree on hardly anything. The visitor counts on my site differ between the two programs by as much as 30%.

There are reasons for inaccuracies, if you examine the web logs manually. One factor is users behind an AOL or other proxy that constantly changes the last bits of the visitor's IP address for each new TCP connection request. Another factor is some search engine bots, which might not be counted or might be mistaken for humans.
And those viruses bouncing around (or whatever the right term is for them). And time between visits by a single visitor.

So you can either believe you're getting more visitors than you really are, make a guess based on the wrong information, or write your own software. :)
