20 gigs is pushing the line, topping out at the highest of most plans, if not higher than most hosts allow on a shared virtual plan. Not that it isn't offered (I think Burst offers it, Tera-byte as mentioned before), but that you aren't going to find many. Surprisingly, someone posted a link to Earthlink's plans and I believe they offered 20+ plans. Search http://www.sitepointforums.com under the web hosting/domain names forum for 'Earthlink' and you should find the thread with a link.
Now we get to 'a slow RaQ'. *Sigh* You know I couldn't pass this one up!
News Flash:
A (super fast) PIII 600 loaded with accounts, etc., won't blow the blue off a less loaded Cobalt RaQ. Let's all say it together just so we all get it:
It's not the size of the processor, nor the ram of the box that slows down the machine. It is what's on the machine.
Also, while we're chanting...
It's not the size of the pipe, but how much is going through the pipe.
Common misconception is that a T1 isn't fast. Bullfrog! A $800 T1 will give you better performance than a $30,000 OC3 *if* the OC3 is being utilized close to capacity. Like wise, although a PIII 933 with 1 gig of ram is faster than a PIII 600 with 128MB of ram, it sure as hootin' fish won't be if you load the heck on that PIII 933 box.
Are RaQs fast machines? Heck no, I'm not saying that. But is a RaQ at one host slower than a PIII 600 at another host? Use some common sense and answer that for yourself.
iVersit 06-20-2001, 04:05 AM ya what he said...(look up) AND...
A RaQ is perfectly acceptable so long as the administrators follow these guidelines:
NO more than ~80 accounts per machine!
Do Not overload the system with programs that only 2 clients will ever use...
Stay on top of memory use
Update Security
Keep the server in a good NOC
lburrows 06-20-2001, 04:28 AM You may want to try nomonthly.co.uk as they will do it for a one time fee of £300.... that gives you everything you are looking for except the 20gigs, but you can upgrade this now for just £30 per 5 gigs, again for a one time fee.
I've been with them for a long time now and have several accounts and currently have no complaints... worth looking in to at any rate.

BUT! The way I see it, there is a much bigger chance you would end up on a slow server when getting hosted on a RaQ than a P3 900MHz with 1GB Ram.
Although this depends on the host and how many users they have on each server.

Exactly. Keep in mind that I am not saying RaQ's are fast machines, they simply are not, compared to a PIII 800 machine with a gig of ram. But it is all relative. Don't pass over a host that uses slow PIII 600's in favor of one that uses PIII 933 servers, as this just doesn't make sense. You just want to avoid being put on a slow, overloaded server, no matter what it is.
One thing this does affect is that if your host has restrictions on resources (and any good host will to protect you from the other sites on the machine), 10% processing power of a RaQ3 is less than 10% of the processing power of a PIII 933. But 10% of 256 Mb of ram is also not the same as 10% of 1 gig of ram, etc., etc., etc.
hostrocket 06-20-2001, 10:47 AM Ok Chicken now defend the raq's pricing! :stickout

Chicken 06-20-2001, 01:14 PM Ayyyyyyyyeeeeee! Well, there are some decent lease deals on those things (from Cobalt, and leased boxes from hosts), but as far as purchasing a new one goes... you'd probably do better buying a box and installing the Plesk 200 domain license, though I personally don't care for the current Plesk setup.
