Hi everyone,

It might interest you to know that I got a spam e-mail from a forged address (which I will be gladly spamcopping quite soon) about the latest 'craze' in domain names : '.hm'. Here's the text :

Click here -> http://www.myname.hm - "dot home" is here!

** BREAKING NEWS! **

Missed out on the dot com frenzy? Introducing dot hm!
The new domain names for homepages! .HM domain names work
globally - just like .com!

HM domain names are valuable assets. Those who registered
short, easy to remember .com names several years ago have
sold them for thousands, even millions of dollars! (business.com
recently sold for $7 million!). The value of .HM domains are sure
to increase each day! YOU can get the good, short and easy to
remember names before someone else does!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This email is the first step in launching
our national advertising campaign. We have already planned
ads prominately in PC Magazine, USA Today and on television.
We are offering you a special invitation to grab the best names
BEFORE the flood of new registrations for the new HM
domain space begins! We are providing you a unique
opportunity, giving you an inside track on what could be,
the next "big thing" to hit the Internet - "dot home." You will
NEVER have a better opportunity than RIGHT NOW to get
the BEST names available!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Already own a .com name? You should also attempt to register
that same .hm name to protect the investment you've placed
in your company name or image. Some of the biggest players
in the Internet industry, like WebMD (www.webmd.hm) and
Intel (www.pentium.hm) have already registered their names.
Visit http://www.myname.hm today to get your very own
"dot home" name!
1. Be wary.
2. I find it quite amusing that someone would even try to promote it as a 'home' domain. It certainly doesn't pass the 'speakability' test - try saying 'hm' 15 times quickly and you'll see what I mean ;)
3. I wonder if the top level .hm registrar is involved? :) (I suspect not, but you never know...)
Speaking of which, the .hm extension belongs to Heard and McDonald Islands, a sub-Antarctic outpost in the Southern Indian Ocean which is an Australian research outpost. http://www.iana.org/root-whois/hm.htm provides the information. At the same time, the Admin contact is listed as someone from capital.net.au, who also happens to run TotalNIC.
Hmmm..... Now I've gone completely off topic. I might actually think about registering a certain domain... I'll shut up now. :D
With well over 200 countries in the world, I wonder how many more of these "latest craze" in TLDs we're going to see. We ahve .cc, .ws (billed as World Site). Moldava/Moldavia is selling .md domain names to doctors anywhere in the world (at a hefty premium, I might add), and now .hm
ICANN has announced some new TLDs coming soon (which seem about as useful as udders on a bull).
We discussed this very topic recently at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000426.html
No doubt it was cheaper for Intel to register Pentium (a trademarked name) unde the various country domains than to pay to defend their claim. Heck, they can register a domain name for less than it cost for a letter by their attorneys.
Home domain, .hm? Ho hum.
