View Full Version : FDC - Worst Dedicated Host Ever?

I have heard lots of bad things about FDC on these forums. I wanted to see how bad they were for myself. We have probably 6 servers with RS but we wanted higher bandwidth for a server we were going to host free sites on so we decided to go with FDC. Here is basically how it laid out:

Day 1 - Ordered and got the server set up a few hours later so far satisfied
Day 2 - Connection speed VERY VERY slow and constant timeouts....could not even update the RPM's due to constant disconnects. Submitted a ticket...nothing happened.
Day 3 - Got a reply saying prob. fixed. Speed is okay now but the setup is totally screwed up. They have the connection running from the DC to another state then back into the DC. Now also notice the CPU is messed up. Ordered 2.4ghz and they have it set running at 1.8. Submit another ticket.
Day 4 - Finally reply to ticket and have cpu fixed.
Day 5 - Finally hope that things are all fixed and are ready to go.
Day 6 - Request additional IP's and explain what they are used for.
Day 7 - Finally get a reply for IP request saying we need further justification. Further justification given and IP's are delivered later that day or next day (can't remember)
Day 8 - Go to install some software and can't login via ssh. Got an error saying the server key has been changed. They reformatted or gave our server to someone else!!! Submit ticket and it's not replied to all day.
Day 9 - Quitting (of course they don't do refunds)

I understand we should expect a few problems here and there but this is just ridiculous. They seriously will post one reply to a ticket per day at max. I want to warn everyone to stay away.

Doesen't necessarilly indicate your server was formatted, mind you obviouisly indicates something is very very wrong.

There were OTHER issues with the server too.
After using it for a while after a reboot , RPM would just start hanging, while doing a simple rpm -qa for example it would just sit there, you can control-c, control-z , you would have to kill -9 pid. Doing an strace would show it was doing a select over and over and timeing out. I put in several comments about this in our tickets and they pretty much ignored it, not even a simple we will look into it.

There was some MAJOR issues with that box. Whats even funnier is on that box pinging another box on same net i would get a 200MS ping.

The saying goes and continues to be true, you get what you pay for. We tried to be optimistic and patient with there support but at somepoint you have to put your foot down.

Maybe the server was hacked? Just got it a few days ago, NOTHING was runing it except SSH, no apache, no sendmail. On top of that i made sure it was 'up2date'.

Only things it COULD be is
a) there is a new install on the drive.
b) they gave the server to someone else while it was live
c) Someone hijacked our IP?? And for some odd reason our machine continues to lose the arp battle for the address.
d) it got hacked while runnng nothing, while up2date

Which is more likely? From there lack of organization and professionalism i would say a or b.

I was guessing that someone accidentally (or purposefully) was allocated, or had their server reside on your IP address (as i've watched that happen a few times before, theres no avoiding it 100% when you have clients with root, and netblocks shared amongst clients, eg. in /24's, etc.).

I'd say you're probably right on formatting and resold though, because the only way someone else can really get onto your ip typically like that is if your box is down.... and most routers arp tables cache for several hours at that.

That or they were feeling really really generous and updated all the software for you, including generating new keys, and accidentally changed the password :D.

Bloody hell! Deja-vous!

That is my experience to a tee, except they did *actually* format my box.

Apparently they're excuse was that someone used our IP, but anyhow we canceled the server.. Seriously i thought you know it wouldnt be so bad even after reading some comments by people on here, thought they were over-exaggerating but that isn't the case at all.
