Hi,

I have recently ordered a PDA, and it is running Pocket PC 2002 (Microsoft).

Does anyone know if I can install MSN messenger on it?
If so, how?

I do not understand how one gets little things like that to work on PDAs.

My PDA has not yet arrived, but it will do soon- hopefully!

I would be very grateful if someone can tell me where I can download/buy PDA software, in particular the PDA version of MSN messenger/Windows Messenger.

Cheers in advance :D

The MSN Messenger on the PDA will not work if your ISP connects you through a proxy. To download it go to http://www.microsoft.com/mobile. If your PDA comes with PPC2002 then chances are that the MSN Messenger is already installed.

Thanks for that swift reply! :)

What do you mean- through a proxy?

Yes that's true. If you purchased a PDA with PocketPC 2002 premium edition it will include MSN messanger in the ROM. All the latest PPC's include PPC premium edition so I would be almost certain MSN messanger is included in the ROM. :)

Yes.

Take a look at the Pocket PC for yourself, and perhaps you could judge if it has the premium edition.

The link is- www.dell.co.uk - then click on the "Home & Office" link, and then on the "New PDAs" link, and then on the "Axim X5 Standard" PDA.

Cheers :D

Keep comments coming.

Does anyone know any good online software shops for Pocket PC 2002 powered PDAs?

It has nothing to do with your ISP's connection.

If I have BlueTooth on my Windows XP Laptop, and BlueTooth on my Pocket PC 2002 PDA- will the internet connection on the PDA work, if my Laptop is connected to the web?

I would be grateful if someone can answer this one as well ;)

Thank you everyone! :D

Also- would the PDA support 128BIT encryption?

Presumably, Pocket PC 2002 comes with IE 6 - so would I be able to access my Natwest online banking which uses 128 bit encryption?

Yes, this should work (I think) as long as you dont use a proxy.
I thought you where talking about connecting through GPRS or modem phone to the Net.

Yes, you should be able to use it and no, it's not IE6 ;) It doesn't support Javascript

I have a Microsoft Smartphone (http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/smartphone/hardware/default.asp) and MSN Messenger comes as a pre-installed feature. Not that I have ever used it ;)

Thats a pretty awesome phone! Can you SSH with it also?

Where did you get it from? I went to the orange site but cant find any info on purchasing it or a price.

Hmm, not sure if there is a mobile SSH client. I have certainly been able to login to WHM and things of that nature to restart services, reboot servers etc. I wouldn't go as far as saying you can "fully manage" a server from it, but it's sure handy. For example, if I am on the move and Alertra fire off an alert to my phone I can then check-up directly on the server without the need to fire-up my laptop or go to a PC. Very handy :)

The site wont let me link it directly (uses POST commands) but go to http://shop.orange.co.uk click "browse or buy" --> "see all pay monthly phones" --> click "Next 5 Phones" at the bottom of the page twice and the "Orange SPV" should be listed 3rd from the top :)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your replies to my questions.

Yes I will be using a Blue Tooth Mobile to connect most of the time (The SonyEricson T68i) but I would like to know if I could have my laptop connected to the net, and have the PDA share its connection via the bluetooth function on both machines?

Al :D

For SSH get SSHCE (www.movsoftware.com). It's only a 80 bucks. Unfortunately it only supports protocol 1, so you would have a think about an workaround. I personally login at webmin, turn on protocol 1, restart SSH and then login with my IPAQ :) From there I can do all servers with protocol 2 ;) When I finish I just turn off p1 and that's it.

YES you would be able. And: You'd better look for PDA forums, here you won't find that many users having experience with mobile computing :stickout:
