I`ve got a silly question. Where do most of you web hosts... host your main business site? On the same server that hosts hundreds of your customers...or a completely seperate server that doesn`t host any of your customers?

I`m about to outsource support for one of my dedicated servers and am going to have a support ticket system installed... but maybe it wouldn`t be a good idea to install it on the same server as my customers are on because if the server goes down they won`t be able to access the ticket system then.

Maybe i should host my main site and support ticket system at interland or something heh

If you can host your server at a different host or provider I would suggest that. The bad thing about just hosting on a different server at the same provider is if the channels get clogged or they have to take everything down. Your site and your clients sites would get disconnected from the 'NET. So it would be a wise ideal to have it a different providers just for redundancy :)

Well, idealy, you want your company's site to be off-site from the rest of your customers. Main reason being that it can be isolated from any network/hardware/weather/etc. issues that might occur to your customers. I've made contacts in the past where you would trade web hosting space on your server with another company and then host each others forum or helpdesk system. That would probably be what I recommend.

With your first question, I think at first it would probably be best to host it on the same machine (for cost purposes) but you'll probably want to move it off as soon as you can afford to.

Currently we have a separate server.

Ya, that`s what I thought. I`ll move my main site and ticket system to another host such as interland or whatnot. That would be best.

That way if one of my servers go down customers can still contact me through the ticket system to scream at me :D

we host our helpdesk and mail server offsite. we have shared and dedicated server clients in 2 datacenters and all of the support methods are hosted elsewhere. if you can afford it, it is definitely one of the first things you should invest in, though i wouldnt necessarily recommend interland =]

ideal is to have it at different network so that your client can contact or get support when there are some problems.

Yeah, i wasn`t going to actaully use interland of course.

I`ll go ahead and give c-i-h-o-s-t a shot.

J/K :D

I guess i`ll use my old VO reseller account and setup my site there under my custom nameservers i already have there. That would probably be best, can`t think of any other place to host it.

It's a very good idea to do something just like that.

We are investing some money into using another quality provider to host our website, members area and support facilities while our clients are on our actual servers.

This we are hoping will help with any downtime we experience, and will let them know that we are here for them and ready to help them.

Plus it may make them think they are the ones who are wrong, and in actual fact the server is up since our main site is up meaning no complaints. :D
