Hey guys,
In your experience or opinion, how many domains could a server handle?
lets say you offer a 50MB disk space, 300MB transfer package and it is a 80 GIG HD w/500GB Transfer (P4 2.4GHZ 1G RAM)
The mathematical answer would be 1600 accounts to fill the space and bandwidth, right?
But, how many accounts can you actually put on a server and still give good service?

Not a lot of bandwidth at all.
500 or possibly 600 - you don't want your clients to think there are too many people on the server. Plus you have to calculate costs, etc. etc. etc.
We put 200 clients on a server with:
Dual Intel Xeon 2.0GHz Processors
1GB DDR ECC RAM
Dual 73GB 10k Ultra 320 RPM SCSI drives
Red hat 7.3 / cPanel 6.0
But the package is: 200mb space + 5gb bandwidth
Depends on things like prices, resources used, etc. etc.
We only put 200 clients on since barely any resources are used - so why not add a bit of extra clients on? (Make no mistake though - we don't oversell.)

This question seems to be asked every week. I'm sure you could use the search function and find the same answers that are going to fill this thread.
It depends on the sites you're putting on the server.

1 good account using 50mb can easily overwhelm your server if you have it getting database intensive, tracking sessions and getting a hit a second !. So it really depends on the TYPE of sites you put on the server

It really depends on what kind of customers you'll be hosting. If they are doing extensive database driven sites or things similar, it'll decrease the maximum amount of sites on the box, but if its simple, straight html and graphics, you can reasonably get over 1000 on a box. Obviously, monitor the performance levels and webpage load times as you start getting into higher numbers. Hopefully, by the time you get 500 sites you'll be making enough money to buy more servers. :)

My company has just racked up nine new packages of which we only plan to offer 6 - from each we have calculated how many clients we can put on making sure we make at least double what the server costs.
Noting we this we have not oversold, and will be making enough profit to be able to offer quality support at all hours.
You should do the same. Especially if you get at minimum double the cost of the server, that gives you nice profit to offer quality support and such until you need another server.
Try what we've done - you'll then be able to work out profit per client, profit per full server, monthly and annual costs, etc. etc. so you can see if you are first off charging enough and secondly putting enough or too many clients per server.
